Powys Trading Standards is the enforcement service that is responsible for protecting legitimate traders and consumers from scams and unfair trading. We are working to achieve a fair and safe trading environment and informed confident consumers.
• The Trading Standards Service enforces the laws that govern the goods and services which are bought, sold, hired or advertised in the County. We work t
o make local communities better and safer places for people to live in; and to make markets competitive for businesses to trade in.
• We enforce Animal Health & Welfare laws in relation to the ownership, movement and sale of farm and companion animals in the County.
• Advice for general consumers is provided via the CAB consumer helpline (03454040506) however we do offer advice and support to vulnerable consumers. We also provide information on Animal Health & Welfare regulations, consumer education and calibration services. The laws Trading Standards cover is a wide area, which includes:
- counterfeit goods
- product labelling
- product safety
- food labelling
- weights and measures
- under-age sales
- animal welfare
Our duties include:
- visiting local traders for routine checks or to investigate complaints
- taking samples of goods for testing
- checking that weighing scales, petrol pumps and spirit measures are accurate
- checking that food labeling is correct and advertising is not misleading
- advising consumers and businesses about the law
- investigating suspected offences, which could include undercover or surveillance work
