Did you know that Carol Vorderman began her professional journey as a Junior Engineer... in Dinorwig?

Back in the 1980's, during the construction of ENGIE’s pumped hydro storage asset in Dinorwig, North Wales - Carol was working on site as a Junior Engineer.

🎥 In our ENGIE X Engineering series, we go behind the scenes of the full replanting of Europe’s largest pumped storage hydro plant - meeting the engineers delivering one of the most ambitious infrastructure upgrades of its kind.

First Minister of Wales visits Dinorwig – our pumped storage hydro site in North Wales – as we invest up to £1 billion into the refurbishment ⚡

On Friday, we were delighted to welcome Eluned Morgan, the First Minister of Wales, along with a host of national and trade press, to Dinorwig. This site is currently undergoing a major refurbishment to ensure it continues providing clean energy for decades to come.

During the visit, we had the chance to tour the control room and turbine hall, and engage with experts on the ground. They shared insights into the replanting plans and highlighted how the project benefits the local community by creating jobs and training opportunities.

Dinorwig, alongside our other pumped storage hydro site, Ffestiniog, play a crucial role in supporting the Government’s ambitious target of achieving a zero-carbon power grid by 2030. Both sites are vital for maintaining energy security, ready to deploy power in seconds when demand spikes.

Teitl: Cludo Falfiau Mawr o Borth Penrhyn i Orsaf Bŵer Dinorwig
Dyddiad: 14 Mawrth 2025

Fel y gŵyr llawer ohonoch, mae ENGIE yn adnewyddu Gorsaf Bŵer Dinorwig – neu’r Mynydd Gwefru, fel mae hefyd yn cael ei alw – er mwyn ymestyn oes yr orsaf a chyflenwi ynni glân pan fydd ei angen.

Mae ENGIE yn fuddsoddwr yng Nghymru ers tro ac mae’n cyflogi tua 200 o staff parhaol mewn swyddi medrus iawn sy’n cael eu gwobrwyo’n dda.

Rydym yn gwerthfawrogi bod gwaith ffordd a tharfu wedi bod yn sgil y gwaith o uwchraddio’r llinellau trawsyrru a’r is-orsaf, a hoffem eich rhybuddio ymlaen llaw am rywfaint o darfu posibl ddydd Llun 17 Mawrth a dydd Mawrth 18 Mawrth.

Fel rhan o’r prosiect, rydyn ni’n amnewid rhywfaint o falfiau mawr iawn y tu mewn i’r orsaf. Maen nhw mor fawr fel bod yn rhaid iddyn nhw gael eu gwneud yn arbennig a’u danfon atom ni, ac yna gael eu cludo i’n safle.

Bydd gwaith cludo sylweddol yn cael ei wneud ddydd Llun 17 Mawrth a dydd Mawrth 18 Mawrth, wrth i unedau mawr Prif Falf y Fewnfa (MIV) gael eu cludo o Borth Penrhyn i Orsaf Bŵer Dinorwig. Bydd yr unedau trwm hyn yn cael eu symud gyda’r heddlu’n eu hebrwng, gan sicrhau eu bod yn cael eu cludo’n ddiogel a threfnus ar hyd y llwybr dynodedig.

Y Llwybr a’r Amserlen:
• Man Cychwyn: Porth Penrhyn
• Llwybr: Yr A4244 a’r A4086 drwy Lanberis
• Amcan o'r Amser Gadael: 09:30 – 10:00
• Amcan o’r Amser Cyrraedd yng Ngorsaf Bŵer Dinorwig: Tua 12:00 - 14:00

Darperir map sy’n dangos y llwybr trosglwyddo ar hyd yr A4244 a’r A4086 isod, er mwyn i helpu gyda’r gwaith cynllunio traffig a chodi ymwybyddiaeth.

O ystyried maint a natur y drafnidiaeth, dylai modurwyr a thrigolion ar hyd y llwybr ddisgwyl oedi posibl o ran traffig ac fe’u cynghorir i gynllunio’n unol â hynny. Rydym yn gwerthfawrogi cydweithrediad y gymuned leol yn fawr, o ran sicrhau bod yr elfennau hanfodol hyn yn cael eu cyflawni’n ddidrafferth ac yn ddiogel.

Diolch i chi am eich dealltwriaeth a’ch amynedd wrth i ni wneud yr ymdrech logistaidd angenrheidiol hon i gefnogi’r gweithrediadau parhaus yng Ngorsaf Bŵer Dinorwig.

Title: Major Valve Transfers from Porth Penrhyn to Dinorwig Power Station
Date: March 14, 2025

As many of you will know, ENGIE is refurbing its Dinorwig Power Plant – also known as Electric Mountain - in order to extend the life of the plant and supply clean energy when it is needed.

ENGIE is a longstanding investor in Wales and employs around 200 permanent staff in highly skilled, well rewarded jobs.

We appreciate that there has been roadworks and disruption as work has been carried out to upgrade the transmission lines and substation and we wanted to let you know in advance about some possible disruption on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 March.

As part of the project we are replacing some really large valves inside the plant. They’re so big that they have to be specially made and shipped to us and then transported to our site.

A significant transportation operation will take place on Monday, March 17, and Tuesday, March 18, as the large MIV (Main Inlet Valve) units are transferred from Porth Penrhyn to Dinorwig Power Station. The movement of these heavy units will be carried out with a police es**rt, ensuring a safe and orderly transfer along the designated route.

Route & Schedule:
• Starting Point: Porth Penrhyn
• Route: A4244 and A4086 via Llanberis
• Estimated Departure: 09:30 – 10:00
• Estimated Arrival at Dinorwig Power Station: Approximately 12:00 - 14:00

A route map illustrating the transfer path along A4244 and A4086 is illustrated below to assist with traffic planning and awareness.

Given the size and nature of the transport, motorists and residents along the route should expect potential traffic delays and are advised to plan accordingly. The cooperation of the local community is greatly appreciated in ensuring the smooth and safe delivery of these essential components.

We thank you for your understanding and patience as we undertake this necessary logistical effort to support the ongoing operations at Dinorwig Power Station.
