Celebrating outstanding support for unpaid carers and disabled people.

CoWL was proud to host a fantastic event during Carers' Week recently when our Chair, Ann Pike, formally received recognition from The King for service to the community and third sector in West Lothian.

Dads – this one’s for you.

Our next Dad’s Space is on Wednesday 17 June at 10am at The Chain Runner, Livingston.

This is a relaxed, no-pressure space for dads, grandads, stepdads and kinship carers who support a child (0–16) with additional support needs.
No agendas, no expectations. Just a chance to grab a brew, have a chat and spend time with others who understand.

Whether you want to talk, listen, or just get out the house for a bit, you’ll be made welcome.

The group is run by CoWL staff and volunteers who are dads and parent carers themselves so you’re in good company.

Dad’s Space runs on the third Wednesday of every month, 10.00–11.30.

Come along and give it a try!

🧵💛 Finding Joy Through Creativity 💛🧵

After completing a quilting course using a grant from our Time to Live scheme (w/ Shared Care Scotland), one of our carers has discovered a real passion — and talent — for creating beautiful quilts. What started as trying something new has opened up a whole new world for her.

She is now volunteering with the wonderful organisation Just Sew Kind, making quilts to donate to charities, including CoWL 🧡

These handmade quilts are not just incredibly thoughtful gifts. They’re filled with care, creativity, and kindness, bringing comfort to so many. We’re so proud to see how this experience has grown into something so positive, both for her and for others. Just take a look at some of the amazing quilts she has created!

It has been a busy and wonderful week for Carers Week within the Young Carers Service. Alongside our raising awareness sessions, we have been busy planning our upcoming summer programme, which will be shared with families over the next week or two.

This week, we continued our school visits, supporting a number of young carers in their education settings. Our Tuesday groups also came to a close for the term, and we finished decorating rocks together as a lovely end of term activity.

Xanthe and Wilma also had the opportunity to visit Mitsubishi, where they spoke with staff to raise awareness of CoWL services and the support available to all the people we support.

We have just had two last minute appointments become available to speak with a member of CoWL staff in West Calder Community Hub on Monday 15th June.

This is a chance for unpaid carers and disabled adults in the area to access information, advice and support, face-to-face in an area more local to you.

Appointment slots are 30 minutes and must be booked. You can do so on our website.

This month at the Carers of Autistic Adults Support Group, we welcomed Richard Ibbotson to speak to us about sleep and autism.

Sleep problems in our autistic loved ones is something many experience. Whether it's falling asleep or staying asleep, everyone that attended the group could relate to Richard's presentation.

Thank you to our friends at Pasda for arranging for Richard to come along, to Crofthead Farm and the multicultural hub for hosting us, and to Richard himself for delivering an interesting and engaging conversation on this topic.

Next month we will be back to meeting at Sycamore House. If you are a carer to an autistic adult aged 16 or older, then we would love to see you. No need to book, just come along.

Carers Week 2026 – Building Carer Friendly Communities

This year’s Carers Week theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities – recognising the vital role unpaid carers play and ensuring they are understood, valued, and supported in their local communities, schools, workplaces, and health services.

At the Young Carer Service in West Lothian, we are proud to support young carers all year round. During Carers Week, and beyond, our team continues to be out and about in local schools, providing support, raising awareness, and making sure young carers feel seen and heard.

We also run our regular groups, giving young carers a chance to connect, relax, and have fun with others who understand their experiences.

If you are a young carer, or know someone who might benefit from support, please get in touch to find out more about what we offer.

Together, we can help build more carer friendly communities where every young carer feels supported and valued

“I think a carer friendly community is one where people go the extra mile, meaningfully ask how I’m doing, and genuinely listen to my answer.”

This Carers Week, we’re reflecting on what really makes a community carer friendly and how small actions, like taking the time to listen, can make a big difference.

Find out how you can help build a more carer friendly community: www.carersweek.org/building-carer-friendly-communities/

At CoWL, we see the difference that understanding and support can make. We’re here for carers and young carers, offering support, connection and a space to feel heard. Get in touch to find out more.
