🫡 From Cadet to Corporal 🫡

We are delighted to announce that Cadet Jacob Exley has been officially promoted to the rank of Cadet Corporal at 2490 (Spen Valley) Squadron! ✈️👏

Jacob has worked hard to earn his promotion, demonstrating the commitment, leadership, maturity and responsibility required to take the next step as a Cadet NCO. 💪🫡

As a Corporal, Jacob will now take on increased responsibility within the squadron, supporting the staff team, helping to lead his fellow cadets being an important role model to all on Squadron.🎖️

We’re incredibly proud of Jacob and look forward to seeing him develop his leadership skills and make the most of his new appointment.

🏔️ Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition🏔️

A huge congratulations to Cadet Matthew Addison, who successfully completed his Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award expedition in Snowdonia over the summer! 🥾⛰️

Matthew took part in a challenging four-day expedition, alongside cadets from across South and West Yorkshire Wing, putting his skills, resilience and teamwork to the test in some of the stunning and demanding terrain that Snowdonia has to offer. 🇬🇧🏔️

The Gold expedition is a significant achievement and requires much more than simply putting one foot in front of the other. Over the four days, Matthew had to demonstrate navigation, route planning, teamwork, communication, campcraft, time management and problem-solving, while also showing the determination and resilience needed to keep going when the terrain and conditions became challenging. 🗺️🥾⛺

Experiences like this develop skills that extend far beyond the expedition itself — building confidence, independence, leadership and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. These are exactly the qualities that we want to see our cadets developing through their time in the Air Cadets. ✈️👏

A massive thank you to all of the Directing Staff who gave up their time and effort to plan, organise and deliver such an awesome expedition opportunity💙

Well done, Matthew — an excellent achievement and something you should be incredibly proud of! Good luck with the rest of your award! 🏆👏

🎖️ GOOD LUCK, SGT SAPSFORD! 🎖️

Today we say a fond farewell to Sergeant Austen Sapsford, who is leaving 2490 (Spen Valley) Squadron as he takes the next exciting step in his journey, joining the Army Foundation College in Harrogate. 🇬🇧🪖

During his time with 2490, Sgt Sapsford has been a fantastic member of the squadron and an excellent role model for our cadets. 👏

With a real passion for target shooting and adventure training, Austen has thrown himself into the opportunities available and has always been keen to develop his own skills while encouraging others. 🧗‍♀️🎯👥

He has also played an important role in supporting the training of our newest cadets in White Flight, helping them take those first steps in their cadet journey. ✈️

We’re incredibly proud of what Austen has achieved during his time with us and are excited to see where this next chapter takes him.

🎉Welcome to the Team. CI Gooch! 🎉

We’re delighted to officially welcome Civilian Instructor Callum Gooch to 2490 (Spen Valley) Squadron! ✈️💙

Having had a fantastic career as a cadet himself, Callum has made the transition at just 18 years old from cadet to Adult Volunteer, continuing his journey with the squadron in a new role. 👏

📚 Callum will be focusing on developing into our Training Officer, helping to plan and deliver engaging training opportunities and continuing to give our cadets the experiences and skills they need to thrive.

It’s fantastic to see a former cadet take the next step and give back to the organisation that has already given him so much. We’re looking forward to seeing what you bring to the team, Callum!

✈️Taking to the Skies✈️

Recently some of our cadets had the chance to put the AIR in RAF Air Cadets and took to the skies over North Yorkshire! 🛩️

From the moment they arrived at the airfield, the excitement was building. Flying suits were issued, safety briefs completed given and then the moment everyone had been waiting for… stepping into the aircraft! 👩‍✈️

For some of our cadets, this was their first ever flight and a culmination of their work towards their Blue Aviation Wings 🔵✈️

A huge THANK YOU to the team at RAF Leeming for giving our cadets this incredible opportunity and helping them experience the thrill of flying first hand!🌟

A huge congratulations to Cpl Charlie Hird on completing their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award! 🎉👏

This is a fantastic achievement and is a real reflection of the effort, commitment and determination Charlie has shown throughout the award. 💪⭐

Along the way, Charlie has developed a wide range of valuable skills, including leadership, teamwork, resilience, organisation, problem-solving and perseverance — skills that will serve them well both within the Air Cadets and beyond. 🧭🤝🎯

The expedition challenges in particular require teamwork, preparation and the ability to keep going when things get tough — and Charlie has demonstrated all of these brilliantly! 🥾⛰️🌦️

✈️🫡Congratulations, Flight Sergeant 🫡✈️

It gives us great pleasure to celebrate the recent promotion of our Squadron SNCO who has moved through the ranks from Sergeant to Flight Sergeant. 👏

Since transferring to 2490, Flight Sergeant Atkins has been a key member of the squadron team helping us to push our cadets further and support the delivery of all things drill, discipline and deportment. This has culminated in the Squadron being placed in the upper third of the wing in most areas at this years recent Wing Training Day. 📈🌟

Officer Commanding 2490, Flight Lieutenant Owen said “It’s fantastic to see Flight Sergeant Atkins progress through the ranks. While it is important to celebrate the achievements of our fantastic cadets, it is just as crucial to shine a light on our amazing adult volunteers. FS Atkins is a dedicated member of the staff team who has helped transform the squadron and show cadets what is possible when they become a team and put their mind to something. It is a privilege to have you as part of Team2490!”✈️💪
