When Sonia developed lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment, she initially felt overwhelmed and anxious about managing the lifelong condition. With compassionate support from the specialist lymphoedema team at CCC, she regained her confidence, discovered a passion for dragon boat racing and went on to win four silver medals on the international stage.

Sonia has been living with lymphoedema since 2021, due to the removal of lymph nodes under her arm whilst going through treatment for breast cancer.

The 46-year-old from Wallasey is sharing her story to help others going through the same and to thank The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Lymphoedema Team for their support, as initially dealing with the symptoms had a major emotional impact on her mental health, particularly when she noticed her arm beginning to swell.

"I felt ashamed and didn’t want anyone to know. The thought of wearing a compression sleeve was terrifying, but the team took the time to listen. Their empathy and emotional support made such a difference."

Lymphoedema can occur when lymph nodes are removed or damaged by cancer treatment, affecting the flow of lymphatic fluid and causing swelling in the surrounding tissue. The condition cannot be cured, but it can be managed through consistent care, compression, exercise, skin care and specialist support.

With the encouragement of Cathy and Clare, Macmillan clinical nurse specialists in lymphoedema at CCC-Wirral, Sonia joined Pool of Life, a dragon boat racing team for people affected by breast cancer. She has since represented the Breast Cancer GB team, winning four silver medals at her most recent competition in Munich.

"Dragon boat racing changed my whole attitude. If it wasn’t for lymphoedema, I wouldn’t have my medals!

"The swelling in my arm has reduced significantly since taking part in regular exercise as well, and talking to others who have been through something similar helps you realise you are stronger than you think.

"I can’t thank Cathy and Clare enough for their constant support to get me to a place I feel confident and empowered within myself – sleeve and all!"

Join us for The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust's Annual Members Meeting on Wednesday 23 September 2026.

Our Annual Members Meeting is where we present our Annual Report and Accounts for the last financial year (2025/26), and outline our plans for the current year (2026/27). It is open to all our foundation trust members, along with others interested in finding out more about what we do and our exciting plans for the future.

It will take place at 17:30 (5:30pm) on Wednesday 23 September 2026 in Boardroom 3, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - Liverpool, 65 Pembroke Place, Liverpool, L7 8YA.

Capacity is limited so anyone interested in attending must register by 5pm on Friday 18 September 2026 by emailing [email protected] or calling 0151 318 8110. (The Annual Members Meeting is not streamed online.)

Find out about our performance over the last year, including our financial position and delivery of our quality priorities, and what we plan to achieve this year. Our auditors will also attend the meeting to present their comments on our financial performance.

WSP in the UK & Ireland offices across the UK have kindly created thoughtful care packages for people receiving treatment at Macmillan service centres.

Employees in WSP's Liverpool office came together to prepare 10 care packages for patients undergoing treatment at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

Each package was filled with small comforts chosen to help brighten someone’s day, including adult colouring books, puzzle books, herbal teas, snacks, skincare products, hand warmers and sleep balms. The items were packed into Macmillan-branded gift bags and included handwritten postcards from WSP employee volunteers, adding a personal message of care and support.

Today we said a sad goodbye to our Chief Nurse Julie Gray on her last working day before she retires.

Julie joined The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in 2021 and has been an inspirational leader with a real focus on quality of care, safe staffing levels, Freedom To Speak Up, infection prevention and control, and patient safety and experience. She has also been a fantastic advocate and lead for our nursing and AHP teams.

During her time here, Julie introduced our internal quality accreditation scheme - known as CCCare - along with regular walkrounds where non-executive directors and governors visit services across all our sites to meet patients, carers and staff to get their feedback.

She is retiring just a few weeks after The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre jointly achieved the top score in the country for overall care in the National Inpatient Survey, and was also rated one of the best hospitals in England in the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey.

Julie said: "Clatterbridge is a fantastic place full of people who are totally committed to making sure patients and their families receive the very best cancer care. It is an organisation with a huge heart as well as clinical and non-clinical expertise, research excellence and great team-working. I am very proud to have been a nurse for over 35 years and have really valued my time at Clatterbridge. There is something very special about it."

Chief Executive Joan Spencer said: "Julie has made an outstanding contribution to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. She has always championed the needs of our patients, has been a real advocate for our nursing and allied health professional colleagues, and is a fantastic colleague. She has been a key part of our executive team and I have very much enjoyed working with her."

We are going to miss Julie hugely and wish her a long and very happy retirement!

The Dietetics team at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre has won a top national award for their work developing a predictive tool that identifies head and neck cancer patients at risk of malnutrition, ensuring they can receive all the support they need.

The team has scooped CN Mag’s Geoff Simmonett Award for Commitment to Patient Care 2026 which recognises staff working in dietetics and nutrition who have shown exceptional determination, dedication and compassion during patient-focused nutrition support.

Our Dietetics Team recognised that people with head and neck cancer with low muscle mass are more likely to have severe side-effects that make it difficult for them to tolerate treatment, along with poorer outcomes. This is a particular issue in our patient population so the team went beyond routine clinical practice to look for ways of identifying at-risk patients earlier.

Then they worked with colleagues at Liverpool John Moores University to develop a screening tool using routinely collected measures such as height, weight and handgrip strength and demonstrated it was a strong predictor of low muscle mass.

They are now embedding this tool in their routine assessments so that patients at risk can be identified and supported earlier, before they develop problems. They are also developing an app.

Dietetic Team Leader Wendy Gerrard said on behalf of the team: “We are thrilled to receive this award. This has been an incredibly rewarding partnership between CCC and LJMU and enables us to direct patients to the right nutritional, prehabilitation and rehabilitation support at the right time. We are proud that this collaborative work has been recognised and, most importantly, that it has the potential to make a real difference for patients.”

We welcome Dr Nina Maryanji to The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre (CCC) next Tuesday as our new Chief Medical Officer.

Nina joins us from NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group where she is currently Divisional Medical Director for Medicine and a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Aintree Hospital.

Liverpool born and bred, Nina studied medicine in Nottingham and completed her specialist training in emergency medicine in Scotland. In 2013, she returned to Liverpool as a clinical director and consultant in emergency medicine at Aintree University Hospital. Alongside this, Nina spent 8 years working part-time as a MERIT doctor for North West Ambulance Service, providing medical support on the scene of major incidents. During her annual leave, she worked as a motorsports doctor in Abu Dhabi. She led medical response teams for the Desert Challenge and Formula 1 races.

As our first non-oncologist Chief Medical Officer, Nina brings a distinctive combination of frontline clinical expertise, system leadership and a fresh perspective on cancer care, particularly in urgent care. The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and its partners across Cheshire and Merseyside – together with Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance – are the first in the UK to prioritise urgent and emergency cancer care with a dedicated transformation programme aimed at improving assessment and treatment pathways.

Chief Executive Joan Spencer said: “Nina is a phenomenal leader with great energy and ideas, and the ability to bring people together to get things working effectively and deliver changes that will really benefit patients. Her background in emergency medicine means she has enormous insight and understanding of cancer from a different perspective, complementing our expertise in oncology. I am very much looking forward to working with her.”

Speaking of her appointment, Dr Nina Maryanji said: “I am delighted to be joining The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as Chief Medical Officer. Liverpool has shaped both my personal and professional life, and after 14 years serving patients across the city region, I am proud to take on this role in an organisation whose work touches so many lives. I look forward to working with colleagues and partners across the Trust and beyond to continue improving outcomes for patients and their families, while championing a culture in which our people can continue to thrive and deliver exceptional care.”

Joan added: "On behalf of the Board, I also want to express my thanks and gratitude to Dr Caroline Brammer who has done an outstanding job as our Interim Chief Medical Officer over the last year after stepping in to help us out until we could appoint to the role permanently."

Traffic heading to the Creamfields festival in Daresbury (near Warrington) may affect journey times for patients and visitors this Thursday and Friday.

This includes:

🚗 Patients and visitors going to our Halton site, and
🚗 It may also affect people travelling to our other sites in Liverpool or Wirral via the relevant sections of the M56 and M6 or local roads.

The festival takes place from 27 to 30 August near junction 11 of the M56.

The campsites open from midday tomorrow (Thursday 27 August) so traffic could be heavier than usual as people arrive.
