Ranger Bree recently spotted and photographed this rare northern dune tiger beetle basking in the dunes.

They’re one of the fastest running beetles in the world. Due to how quickly they can dart off it can be tricky to get a photo, so a real treat to have this one.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬:

🪳The is one of the last few places they can be still found in the UK.

🪳Their presence is a sign of a healthy dune system, with patches of bare, moving sand.

🪳They have long legs, which help them run quickly but they can also fly.

🪳After a fast sprint they have to pause and “refocus” their vision.

🪳They love to sunbathe on warm sand to build up energy to hunt.

🪳Fierce little predators, hunting other insects in open sand.

🪳Can dig holes up to 20cm deep into the face of the dunes to hide on cooler nights.

🪳They also lay larvae in these burrows, protecting them over winter before they emerge in summer.

Like many coastal and countryside places, we provide large industrial bins in our car parks, where they’re easy for everyone to access and can be safely emptied without impacting sensitive conservation areas.

With one of the UK’s largest tidal ranges, the sea often reaches the dunes. Unfortunately, signs and bins don’t last long and can be quickly overwhelmed on busy days.

Sadly, much of the litter we find is individual pieces left behind on the beach - so after busy periods, we prioritise clearing this before it’s carried out to sea.

✅14 large 1100 litre bins (7 in each car park).

✅ More frequent Sefton Council bin collections (3 times a week).

✅ Extra seasonal staff dedicated to daily litter picking across site.

✅ All staff litter picks in hotspots after busy sunny days.

✅ Daily checks and collection of bagged litter across the site.

✅ Details of bin facilities on our website, social media and large map signs on site.

✅ “Love it here, don’t leave it here” signs in litter hotspots.

✅ Local corporate volunteer litter picking groups every Monday until September.

✅ Support for local community litter picking groups including:
- Supplying bin bags
- Filled bag drop off / collection points
- Early morning bag collections after events

𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐨𝐧…

➡️More social media to raise awareness of the impact of litter and fires.

➡️New dog waste signs to encourage responsible disposal.

➡️New signs to highlight last bins and none on beach or in woodlands.
