Today, 6 June 2026, marks the 82nd anniversary of the Normandy Landings (D-Day), and the Ministry of Defence is providing funding to support WWII veterans travelling to remembrance ceremonies in Europe. This will enable them to return to places of immense historical significance and personal memory.

While we remember the courage and sacrifice of those who took part in the largest seaborne invasion in history, we can also be proud of the crucial role our own local area played.

From RAF Tangmere and training landings at Climping Beach, to the RAF Air Sea Rescue base at Littlehampton Golf Club, the assembly of Mulberry Harbour units at Pagham, to the wounded servicemen flown back for treatment at Bognor War Memorial Hospital, our coastline helped make D-Day possible.

Lest we forget. đŸŒș

Our women's group South Coast Sisters has written to Jess Asato to express our support for her campaign against the awful abuse women suffer online.

This is the text of our letter:
5th June 2026
Jess Asato MP
(via email)
Dear Jess,

We were so impressed by your principled and brave decision to take action against xAI’s egregious disregard of women and children’s safety that we wanted to write in support.
Taking a stand against a company run by one of the most powerful and wealthy men on the planet takes grit and determination and we want you to know that we are 100% behind you. You take this action in our name and the name of every woman and child in our country.
We applaud the government’s commitment to halve violence against women and girls in ten years through the strategy published in December 2025, but without strong push back against the denigration of women online, the strategy has its hands tied behind its back. Legislation to prevent children taking naked images of themselves would be an important and valuable step in the right direction, as pointed out by Jess Phillips. However, more widely, we need to insist that social media platforms make safety of their customers as central to their operations as they do profit. We really hope that your court case forces them to do this.
We will be following the progress of your case closely and wish you every success.
In solidarity.
South Coast Sisters....................................................................................................
South Coast Sisters is a group of Labour and Labour sympathetic women along the South Coast, centred around the Bognor Regis and Littlehampton Parliamentary Constituency. We work as a support group for women’s issues and to campaign to improve the lot of women along the South Coast.
We are aware of the dangers to women posed by men in our area as well as more widely. We support the work of our great local Women’s Charity, ‘My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre” and know through them, the extent of the domestic abuse that they help with. Just yesterday, in our local Crown Court in Lewes, out of 30 defendants (all men) before the court, 8 of them are charged with domestic abuse. One of them is charged with the publication of indecent images.

You can support Jess too by signing her petition. (Link in comments).

Councillor Maralyn May, who represents the Courtwick with Toddington Ward, became Mayor of Littlehampton last month. She said, “I would like to pay tribute to my predecessor Councillor Alan Butcher who has been the most amazing hard-working Mayor. He will be a hard act to follow.”

“During my Mayoral year my focus will be community, inclusion, kindness, and care of our green spaces.”

Amidst the hurly burly of politics it is easy to miss the transformational impact of our government’s policies on net zero.

James Murray, editor-in-Chief of BusinessGreen and climate expert gives his view on government progress. (Link in comments below). It’s worth finding time to read or listen to his full article.

He maintains, “The UK has been quietly leading the world in the delivery of a grand project of global significance that is both hugely popular and genuinely era-defining. Governments have been pursuing one of the most inspiring and consequential endeavours in human history.”

Let’s take time to relish our massively positive progress and reflect on the dangers of the anti net zero rhetoric coming from the right wing, even more tragic given previous Conservative administrations’ support.

In James words,
“Right from the start of the crisis, Miliband, Starmer, and Reeves have correctly diagnosed how (the crisis in the Straits of Hormuz) is a fossil fuel shock that can only be tackled by ending fossil fuel reliance. They have pulled forward the next clean power auction to this summer, fast tracked the sale of plug-in solar panels, increased heat pump grants for households reliant on heating oil, and signed off on a host of smaller policies all focused on getting the UK off the “fossil fuel rollercoaster”. Every heat pump, solar panel, or roll of insulation installed has become a patriotic act.”
