It's Lincolnshire Show next week - but you're not going?

Please plan any road journeys in the area as the A15 past the showground north of Lincoln will be closed on both Wednesday and Thursday, except for show traffic.

If not going to the show then best to avoid the area, or follow the signed diversions. Please be patient as traffic is likely to be heavy and slow moving in the vicinity.

This awful case shows the danger of driving whilst tired. Please ensure you are well rested before undertaking a long journey, and if you start to feel tired then pull over and take a rest. Better to arrive late than not at all.

Deborah Starr, 68, has been sentenced after causing serious injuries to two pedestrians.

Starr, of Chipping Cross, Clevedon, was travelling towards Sleaford along the A153 at Tattershall when she mounted the pavement and struck a mother, 39 and her daughter (then aged 11) who were walking along it. Both pedestrians were launched into the air by the force of the collision and landed near a wall in a nearby garden.

Meanwhile Starr’s vehicle came to a stop when it collided with a lamppost. Other motorists who witnessed the collision, immediately stopped and rendered first aid to the injured parties, summoning the assistance of the emergency services.

Both mother and daughter received serious injuries as a result of the collision and were taken to different hospitals for urgent treatment. Both underwent emergency surgery in the hours following the collision for their injuries which at the time were described as potentially life threatening. The surgical interventions thankfully stabilised both patients, who have both sustained life changing injuries.

The mother continues to recover from her injuries which included head and internal injuries and multiple fractures to various bones throughout her body. Likewise, her daughter continues with her recovery and her injuries included skull and pelvic fractures as well as numerous cuts, grazes and bruising.

The sentencing follows an extensive investigation by our Serious Collision Investigation Unit. During the investigation, witnesses came forward helping to piece together what had taken place. Those who first spoke with Starr recall her saying about how tired she felt.

In her subsequent police interview, Starr gave no comment to all questions asked, save for confirming her journey route and expressing remorse for the collision.

Detective Sergeant Adam Doona from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This collision was down to Deborah Starr driving whilst tired. At the time of the collision comments were made by her that lead us to believe that she had fallen asleep at the wheel, causing her to mount the pavement.

“The failure of Starr to pull over when she felt tired have left the two pedestrians she hit with devastating lifelong consequences. It is regrettable that we have to keep repeating this message, but please always ensure you are well rested before commencing any journey. It might not be just your life that you destroy should you fall asleep at the wheel.”

Starr, of Chipping Cross, Clevedon, was sentenced at Lincoln Crown Court to two years six months imprisonment suspended for three years after pleading guilty to two offences of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She was also required to undertake 150 hours unpaid work, banned from driving for a total of two years and must take an extended re-test before being allowed to drive again.

Today sees the start of a two week campaign by the National Police Chiefs Council to try and reduce the number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured (KSI) on our roads.

If out riding, please ride safely and sensibly, look out for those who may not see you and ensure you ride within your abilities. Between 2022 and 2025 our Lincolnshire KSI statistics show that 71% of those collisions involving bikes involved bikers from Lincolnshire. The stats also show that in 58% of those collisions, the biker would have been considered as responsible. What this tells us, is that we ALL have a responsibility for our actions and to look out for each other, regardless of what we are driving or riding.

Croft Parish Council recently purchased new solar powered Speed Indicator Devices (SID) for installation in response to concerns regarding the speed of traffic in their community. They are now in operation at either end of Church Lane, in the 30mph limit, and serve as a useful reinforcement of the limit for drivers by showing their speed.

The ABC of road safety.

In this hot weather it is easy to forget the B - Be patient. Be prepared for the hot weather and the heavy traffic, particularly on our coastal routes.

Being patient helps you arrive safely and more relaxed - getting hot and bothered won't get you there any quicker, so be prepared and plan ahead for your journey, allowing plenty of time to arrive at your destination.

Or alternatively remember - it is better to arrive late than never.

Bikers!! All Road Users!!

The good weather is sure to bring bikes out onto our roads - watch out for them, they are harder to spot being a smaller object - so make sure to really look hard, especially at junctions.

Bikers - remember you are harder to spot - ensure you have your headlights on, don't overtake approaching junctions and be sure you have been seen. Be careful if filtering in heavy traffic, especially on our coastal routes and be prepared for odd manoeuvres by those who are unfamiliar with the area.

It is the responsibility of ALL of us to look after each other - let us all ensure we can enjoy this holiday period safely.

Lincoln MP Falconer today kindly convened a meeting at Skellingthorpe roundabout to hear local residents concerns regarding the safety of the roundabout.

Also present were representatives of National Highways (who have responsibility for the roundabout) and Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership to hear those concerns and explore ways to make the roundabout safer in the future.

National Highways will go away to explore funding and options, especially given the future planned housing developments in the area, having heard the issues raised and thoughts of the local communities.

It's a Bank Holiday Weekend (and the start of half term!)

If you are travelling over the next week, it is due to be warm, sunny and the roads are likely to be busy. So plan ahead - ensure plenty of breaks on long journeys and plan ahead if travelling with children and/or animals so as not to be distracted.

Don't leave animals or children in cars during sunny and hot weather, and remember the ABC of road safety - Avoid distractions, Be patient and Concentrate. This is so important when it is busy and the weather is warm and sunny, when we become tired more easily and frustrated.

It is much more important that we ALL take responsibility for not only ourselves, but each other, so that we can get to our destinations safely and enjoy the time off.

Safe travels!!
