Missy đŸ’…đŸ» and Moss 🍃

When these two both came in they were the only similarly aged corvid kids - all the others were much older or younger, and so couldn’t be mixed as nestmates. Though I don’t normally mix crows and magpies, rather than them have no social interaction I decided it would be better for them to be foster siblings as they’re closely related species. Since then, they’ve both helped each other develop mentally and the importance of social stimulation for Corvids cannot be stressed enough. Today though, it was time for them to graduate into their respective flocks, as pies need to learn to fear crows, and crows need to learn that pies are a valid (if a little dangerous) food source. It’s bittersweet and a bit of a Fox and the Hound style breakup, but once they’ve moved into their species specific aviaries they’ll soon move on, and they can still chat as they’re only living round the corner from each other. Who knows, maybe one day they’ll encounter each other in the wild, share some roadkill, and reminisce about that weird ape that helped them when they were chicks.

HOW IS MY CHILD SO BEAUTIFUL

this doesn’t need a caption, you all know about Maevey Wavey by now. We had a lovely birdspotting walk with who took these great pics and saw a load of wild raptors. She didn’t bate once, not even when she saw a sprawk. Even let Mark scritch her beak whiskers. I can’t believe this bird is even alive let alone living the life in her penthouse mews going for daily strolls and doing creance work. There have been conversations with my falconry mentor about her going on a date with his unreleasable male kes... watch this space 👀

Maeve when she saw a blackbird on our walk yesterday: 👀đŸ”Ș

Don’t worry, she stayed on the glove the whole time: make sure your birds are socially distancing, avian flu is still rife boys and gulls.

The Watermelon Gang had a toast party today. My usual enrichment options for the parrots are running low - I like to use natural objects like branches, rotten logs and wild fruits and nuts to give them things to shred and destroy, but the current avian flu pandemic means I can’t take wild materials for risk of contamination. So they’ve been having lots of loo roll tubes, expensive nuts and toast instead! Everyone needs a lockdown hobby 🩜 🍉 🎉

Duke, Abigail, and Lucy all had very different starts in life. Duke was ‘unwanted’ because of his gender, Abigail was dumped in a bin whilst still alive because she was ‘surplus to requirements’ at a hatchery, and Lucy was separated from her mum as a gosling. Luckily they all found sanctuary here and were able to grow up in a safe environment. Duke is a s*x addict, Abigail is a compulsive eater, and Lucy will destroy anything she can get her bill on - they realised that their addictions are complimentary, and so they began a polyamorous relationship, and I couldn’t be happier for them. They’ve now found their forever home with a fellow rehabber who has a large flock of ducks and geese where they can live out their days together.

Dodge loves a cuddle sometimes 😍 two minutes later though, she beat the s**t out of my hand because I didn’t read her body language properly when she told me to stop scritching. Corvids aren’t pets, they’re people, and it’s extremely important to respect their boundaries to help them grow up to be confident and independent individuals.

Throwback to summer when this little dude was found trapped on the surface when the ground was baked to a crisp by the heat. After stuffing his face on waxworms and having a drink, he squiggled into the compost heap where the soil was still nice and damp.

Florence

This fluffy legged lady was found starving in a park, probably dumped by her former human. She’s now in love with a strapping ex racing pigeon named Red and is living her dream.
