Open Thurs - Mon 11-4 (Nov-March) Mon, Tue, Thurs, Fri, Sat Sun 11-5 (April-Oct) Adults £5, Child £2 Nestled in Lichfield’s idyllic Cathedral Close, Darwin House is an independent, accredited Museum that was once the family home of doctor, inventor and published poet Erasmus Darwin (1731 – 1802). With its unique place in Georgian history Darwin House showcases the breadth of Erasmus Darwin’s int

erests and achievements which laid the foundations for his grandson and evolutionary biologist Charles. Ponder in the room where leading Midland industrialists and thinkers were thought to have gathered and shared ground-breaking ideas. Discover the herbs in our tranquil garden used to season Mrs Darwin’s cooking. Learn about the medicinal qualities of plants with which Erasmus treated his patients (often free of charge!). Look through his personal journal to get a sense of his original mind and uncover what inspired his many theories and inventions including a flushing toilet and a speaking machine to name a few. Explore Darwin’s work through interactive exhibits, replica costumes and historical objects. Come as many times as you like, there’s always more to know about the Amazing Dr Darwin.

This amazing Cecile Brunner rose bush is smothered in flowers every year and has the most beautiful scent. It was planted by a lovely lady who lived in the house many years ago and who, after the house became a museum, was one of our longest serving volunteers. We call it "Polly's Rose" .

Erasmus Darwin Herb Garden has excelled in this year's 'It's Your Neighbourhood' Awards

The Herb Garden at Erasmus Darwin Museum in Lichfield has a history of producing Level 5, Outstanding Awards in the last five years of the IYN presentations, a subcategory of the RHS Britain in Bloom organisation. In addition, this year, the Garden has been awarded the Certificate of Merit for consistent and sustained high gardening standards.
Once a year, one entry is chosen by the judges to reward a Garden in the Heart of England region. The garden volunteers are honoured to have this acknowledgement of their care, time and enthusiasm for the garden.
This award winning garden is free to enter and always open. The garden is also home to a Plant Heritage Historical Collection, 'Dr. Darwin's Medicine Chest'. Plants directly referenced to the writings of Dr Darwin and professional physicians of his time.
