Thanks for visiting Carter The Brave's Page

We all work so hard for our children to be happy, fulfilled and enjoy care-free lives so it really is every parent’s worst nightmare to be sat down and told that their child is critically ill. On the 11th January 2016 we received the devastating diagnosis that our gorgeous little boy, Carter, had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. 100% leukaemia cells with

zero healthy cells seen. The road has been a gruelling one of 8 months intensive treatment followed by 3 years of maintenance treatment. Carter has been so incredibly brave throughout. At only 4 years old, he understood how vital his wigglies (central lines) were, he accepted his magic sleeps on a weekly and sometimes twice a week basis, he quietly took all of his chemotherapy and steroid treatment in hospital & at home and one of the most touching things is that when he lost his hair he just said ‘at least we don’t need to wash it now mummy.’ He knew that his factory was broken and was making poorly blood and that we needed it fixed to make ‘Spiderman blood’ as we call it. He knew he had a lot of weeds and not many flowers so when our consultant told us he could see a few flowers, Carter said ‘that’s good Mummy, I think they like the medicine we are giving them.’
In addition to this bravery, despite switching to a life of cannulas, chemo, blood tests, hospital, magic sleeps & scans, Carter has never complained about missing the fun of school, swimming, horse-riding, football or parties. He has never mentioned his sore back after the lumbar punctures and bone marrow tests and he didn’t even cry about not being able to walk for so long. Such strength from a 4 year old who has now grown up into a remarkable young lad at 8 years old. Carter rang the bell in March 2019 & we thought that would be the end of the journey but on the contrary it fell quickly upon BCH to try & find out what was causing Carter’s new problems. We had ambulances, many many 60 minute dashes & a very poorly boy. I simply cannot fault BCH again this year as Carter has received the most phenomenal care. We have had many bone marrow tests, lumbar punctures, countless scans, x-rays, nerve testing & blood tests & spent about 4 or 5 weeks total as inpatients. The cause is still unknown…
One of our missions continues to be our fundraising to help other people’s Carters. We set up Carter the Brave in April 2016 to raise funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Research & other Childhood Cancer related causes. So far we have purchased the handsfree Vocera system across the BCH Oncology ward & clinic, 3 IV Vein Finders, 2 Mobile Ear & Throat Devices, DVD players & DVDs for clinic, 2 iPads, 625 AMAZON vouchers for the newly diagnosed & finally we were delighted to donate £8000 to Round Table Children’s Wish, which helps fulfil the dreams of children with cancer who are either critically or terminally ill. In November 2019 we were also pleased to purchase purchase 7 GameStations – for clinic, ward & the transplant unit. These GameStations have been 2 years in the making & are the first ones of their kind in the world. Branded with the CTB logo they will now be sold across the world & for each one sold, the manufacturer SL Kids will donate £50 to CTB/BCH. They allow children to play games or watch movies from bed, lying down & in isolation - they are totally mobile much like a hospital bed table. We are currently finalising details of Carter the Brave’s Fellowship Fund which will create a research project to be carried out by Dr Frank Mussai, leading Paediatric Oncology Consultant of BCH. I am forever grateful to the astounding support we have received over the last 4 years & I’ve received so many messages of thanks from patients’ parents. Today I am so proud of Team Carter & what we have all achieved, thank you all so much.

OK, deep breath post... 🏔️🥾

As most of you know, in January 2027 I'm going to be climbing KILIMANJARO! To say this is out of my comfort zone is putting it mildly! At any time this would be a huge challenge, but after the journey of the last year, my fitness is taking its time to come back. 5 months to go and I have a LONG way to go. It feels a tad overwhelming at the moment! 😬😬

Honestly, other than Carter's journey itself, this will be the hardest thing I've ever done! 💪💪

Kili is 5,895m high - the highest free-standing mountain in the world. You trek for 6-7 days straight, through 5 different climates from rainforest to arctic summit. Summit night is around 8 hours of climbing in the dark, in -20 degrees, with 50% less oxygen than at sea level. Altitude sickness is real, and your body just wants to quit. It's as much mental as it is physical….

But even then - it still won't compare to what these children and families go through every single day. That's why I do all of this. To make the journey that little bit easier for other people's Carters. 💛🎗️

My first fundraising push towards it is THIS - the B*H Dragon Boat Race! I'll be paddling my heart out with 7 others from our CTB team on Thursday the 17th September! I haven't touched rowing since my rowing machine days for swimming training, so let's just say this alone is going to be a challenge! 🚣‍♀️💪

Somehow... I've managed to rope in 42 people to join me on this whole Kili journey! Either I can be very persuasive, or that's just how deep these friendships run after all these years! ❤️❤️

Can I just say - this Kili team is INCREDIBLE. The most inspirational bunch of people and their fundraising so far has absolutely blown me away. I feel so lucky to be doing this with you all! 🙏🙏

I know everyone has supported us so incredibly over the last 10 years and we are forever grateful. But as this is my first event for Kili, I'm popping my Kili fundraising link in the comments for anyone who would like to support. ❤️💙

Thank you so much for cheering me on - the B*H boat race & Kili both are going to need it!

Huge congratulations to Neal McCathie for completing the 20km swim across the Menai Straits in 3 hours 20 minutes. Just incredible! 💪 🏊‍♂️

To put that in perspective: that’s navigating some of the fastest tidal currents in the UK, with the added challenge of jellyfish. 🪼 🪼

What makes it even more impressive is that Neal did this to raise funds for our Kili for Carter challenge & has raised an epic £1000 so far! ❤️💙

Feats like this remind me that endurance, mindset & purpose go hand in hand. Neal McCathie certainly demonstrated this!

Wow such an amazing Kili team we have! 💪🏔️🥾 Link to support is in the comments.

❤️💙The Kili 27 Team are utterly inspirational! 💪💙❤️

We’ve had the heights of wing walking... And now for the depths...

Our dear friend Neal McCathie is taking on an incredible 20K swim through the Menai Strait — currents, rocks & the infamous Swellies!

I did a 10K in a pool and thought that was tough! This is 20K! In open water! Target time is 4 hours! It’s unbelievable! 🏊‍♂️💪

If you can spare a few pennies, please support Neal’s Kili for Carter fundraiser - the link is in the comments! 100% of funds raised go to Birmingham Children’s Hospital to help these children have a better journey. ❤️💙

❤️💙A little fundraising opportunity with a fun twist! 💙❤️

A very kind gentleman, through the lovely Mary Champion, has generously offered these amazing 3-foot-high M&M characters for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. 🙏🙏

However, sadly the hospital are unable to accept them as they could be seen to promote sweets and chocolate. 🍫❤️

So… we’re now looking for a fabulous new home for them!

They could be perfect for:
🏪 A café or shop
🏢 Brightening up an office or reception area
🎉 A fun event space, games room or family business

And the bonus? They have great storage space in the back of them too!

If you might be interested — or know someone who would love them — please drop me a message.

100% of funds raised will go to Carter the Brave / Birmingham Children’s Hospital, helping us continue to make a difference for seriously ill children and their families. 💙❤️🙏

A huge THANK YOU to Duncan & Lizzie Hindley of Hindleys Bakery for generously donating an incredible Bread-Making Experience to our 2025 Hollywood Ball auction in support of Carter the Brave 💙❤️💙❤️

The much-anticipated day finally took place in April, where 10 lucky guests enjoyed a fantastic hands-on experience learning the art of bread making from the experts themselves — Duncan & Lizzie Hindley. 🍞🥖

From kneading and shaping to learning professional tips and techniques, everyone had a brilliant time and came away with some wonderful new skills (and plenty of delicious homemade bread too! )

As if that wasn’t enough, the day was rounded off perfectly with a fabulous afternoon tea, making it a truly memorable experience for everyone involved.

Most importantly, events and donations like this make a genuine difference to our fundraising efforts. Duncan & Lizzie continue to support Carter the Brave so generously, and their kindness and commitment have a huge impact on the work we are able to do. Lizzie and her daughter Hannah Hindley will be joining us for Kili in January 2027!

We are incredibly grateful for their ongoing support, generosity and community spirit — thank you for helping us make such a difference. 🙏 🍞 💙❤️
