We would like to speak to them in connection with a high value theft from Tesco on Towngate in Leyland whereby £3000 worth of razors and chocolates were stolen.

We want everyone to have a frightfully fun time….but remember, while Halloween is a treat for many, it's not everyone's cup of witches' brew, so let's make sure we keep the spooky season fun and respectful for all.🍬

🏡 If a house isn't decorated or doesn't look like it's taking part, skip it and head for one that is.
🎭 What feels like a harmless prank to one person can be upsetting to another. Remember kindness. Be respectful and considerate.
🚔 You'll see extra patrols in the run-up to Halloween and Bonfire Night to help keep you safe.
🤝 We're teaming up with partner agencies to make sure everyone can enjoy the season safely.
📞 Halloween and Bonfire Night are busy periods for emergency services. Please help keep emergency lines free for those who need them most and use the most appropriate way to get in touch.
👹 And parents…..Do you know where your little monsters are, who they're with, and what mischief they might be getting up to?

The man pictured is Shaun Newton who today was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his cellmate at HMP Garth in Lancashire.

Newton compressed the neck of Tony Joynes - someone he considered as a friend as well as cellmate - in their cell on the prison's D wing in July 2025.

It will probably never be known why Newton killed him, having denied the offence when interviewed and when giving evidence at his trial at Preston Crown Court Sessions House.

Newton was serving an 18-year sentence at HMP Garth for the attempted murder of a work colleague with who he shared a room at a hostel in 2018.

On Saturday 12th July last year, Newton and Tony Joynes were locked up for the night in their cell.

The following morning, Tony Joynes was found dead in the cell, with the cause of death found to be compression to his neck.

Middlesbrough-born Newton, 35, was found guilty by a jury of murder earlier this week after a seven-day trial.

Returning to the dock today, Newton was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Judge Graham Knowles KC, ordered that Newton serve a minimum of 34 years before being eligible to apply to the parole board for release.

No one should face abuse, intimidation or discrimination simply for going to work.

Last week, during Hate Crime Awareness Week, our officers visited 311 businesses across Preston, Chorley, South Ribble and West Lancashire as part of Operation Hail, our response to tackling hate crime in the workplace!
From takeaways and pubs to health settings and taxi ranks, we spoke to workers about:

✅ What hate crime is
✅ How to report it
✅ Where to find support

Thanks to funding from Lanpac Ltd we also handed out posters, stickers and leaflets to help businesses stand against hate and show support for those who may be affected.

We take all reports of hate crime seriously. If you've experienced it, you do not have to suffer in silence. Report it directly to us or through one of the 23 third-party reporting centres across South Lancashire.
