Scary night waiting for the storm, and hoping it will be nothing like 1987, which was so horrendus with the harm it did. Luckily not to humans or horses.

SEAN SPADAH, from Lewes, won the Grand National, 100years ago. He won by a distance, being the only horse to finish without falling. Buried up near the racecourse, with the ashes of his jockey, Fred Rees. He was trained by George Poole for owner Malcolm McAlpine. After the win, the trainer gave every child in Lewes a silver sixpence.

A couple of years ago we put in a hard surfaced path on our land on the right hand side of this gallop. It did have a surface to suit cyclists walkers and horses. The original established bridleway, in the middle of the paddock, is nearly impassable when we have large amounts of rain The new pathway was used by lots of cyclists, up to 70 horses daily and walkers and has been easier to upkeep. The original bridle way will now have all this traffic!
Unfortunately the SDNP ordered us to get rid of the newer one with a new surface . We don't really understand why they ordered us to do this. The views for everyone were so beautiful, and even disabled people could use it. We are so sorry about this. It has cost a lot of money which would have been better spent elsewhere. We were all better off with the two paths. To all the people who were using it, we are sorry.

Manhattan Boy still holds the record for winning more races around the same track than any other horse. Here he is back to Plumpton on his 21st birthday, with the people who were looking after him in his retirement. It looks like he thought he was going to race again.
