As part of Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating the wonderful people who help bring our historic sites to life✨

Trevor Hutton volunteers as a storyteller here and at our sister-site, Lewes Castle - here's what he has to say about it:

"It’s a pleasure to bring storytelling to the castle, Anne of Cleves House and the Priory.

I really evolved into storytelling through my volunteering, which has always been in or around medieval history. Coming from an acting background, I started by dressing up and re-enacting the period in the hope that it would help bring history to life visually.

Storytelling is really interesting and, like re-enactment, you can create vivid pictures of history, introducing both young people and families to the world of castle and Tudor life and the different roles people occupied.

The more I have grown into the storytelling role, the greater the challenges and interests I have found. I now spend more time writing my own stories, imagining what Anne of Cleves might have been like through a little girl's eyes as she tries on her wedding dress before meeting Henry VIII. At the castle, stories about a little boy wanting to become an archer or a jester have helped bring the period to life.

Most young people want excitement, so there are dragons and other made-up creatures, and I also have Halloween stories ready.

More adults attend than I often expected, and I've found they really enjoy listening too, so I might produce some adult stories next.

I find it really satisfying having a role in these historic sites."

Thank you, Trevor, for sharing your creativity, enthusiasm and love of history with our visitors!📖

We are very grateful for everything they do throughout the year.
