Community groups across Lewes district are being encouraged to put forward their ideas for tackling climate change and supporting nature as applications open for the Ouse Valley Climate Action - Community Pitch.

The initiative offers up to £5,000 to help bring to life projects that create a more sustainable planet.

Councillor Emily O’Brien, Cabinet Member for Climate, Nature and Food Systems said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local groups to turn their ideas into reality.
We know there is a huge amount of passion and creativity in our communities when it comes to tackling climate change and supporting wildlife.

“I really encourage organisations of all sizes to come forward with their ideas and take advantage of this opportunity to make a positive difference where they live. I am proud that Lewes District Council has funded part of this grant pot to support community action on climate and nature.”

Projects can be delivered anywhere across the Lewes district. They could include community gardens, eco-education programmes or sustainable transport initiatives.

Applications are now open and will close on Tuesday, June 30.

Lewes District Council is celebrating a ‘significant milestone’, with all four of its most senior leadership roles now held by women for the first time in its 52-year history.

Last week, Councillor Charlotte Keenan was elected as Chair and Councillor Nikki Fabry as Vice-Chair for the coming year.

These appointments, alongside Councillor Zoe Nicholson as Leader and Councillor Christine Robinson as Deputy Leader, mean all four key civic leadership roles at the council are currently held by women – a first since the council was established in 1974.

Councillor Zoe Nicholson, Leader of the Council, said: “This is a significant and positive milestone for Lewes District Council. Seeing women in each of these leadership roles reflects the progress we are making and the value of different perspectives in public life. Together, we will continue to focus on delivering high-quality services and positive outcomes for residents across the district.”

Councillor Charlotte Keenan, Chair of the Council, said: “I’m really pleased to step into this role at such an important moment. It means a great deal to represent our communities on behalf of Lewes District Council, and I’m looking forward to supporting local groups, celebrating achievements and working closely with residents over the year ahead.”

Founded in 1976 by Steve Fachiri in Wadhurst, East Sussex, Harvey Lloyd Screens began life producing point-of-sale graphics, signage and commercial print for agencies and the high street. Nearly fifty years later, the studio has become one of the UK’s most respected specialist screen printers, known for its collaborative approach, technical expertise and enduring connection to contemporary British graphic art.

The studio’s direction shifted in the early 2000s, when Anthony Burrill arrived looking to print a small run of postcards. Through Burrill, and then through word of mouth, artists, illustrators and designers began discovering Harvey Lloyd, leading to collaborations with many of the most recognisable names in contemporary graphic art and illustration.

Central to the studio’s story is the partnership between Steve Fachiri and Tracey Day, who joined Harvey Lloyd through the Youth Training Scheme in 1989 and never left. Together, they have built a reputation not only for exceptional printmaking, but for their warmth, humour and can-do attitude. While organising 50 Years of Print, not a single artist invited to participate declined — a testament to the affection and respect held for the studio across the industry.

“Harvey Lloyds (Steve & Tracey) are a joy to work with! Everyone who knows them loves them and what they do. Over the last 4 years, I've been fortunate to spend time experimenting with them and my creative director Morgan, whilst also enjoying many great laughs together” - Mr Doodle

Curated by Owen Gildersleeve in partnership with Look Again Newhaven, 50 Years of Print brings together more than 50 artists, designers and illustrators, including Mr Bingo, Anthony Burrill, Orla Kiely, Mr Doodle, Oliver Jeffers, Morag Myerscough, Neville Brody, Supermundane, Sarah Boris, Seb Lester, Louise Lockhart and Tom Pigeon, alongside a new generation of emerging talent selected through Grand Matter’s Future Makers programme.

Presented at the BN9 Studio in Marine Workshops, Newhaven, the exhibition is accompanied by a month-long programme of talks, workshops, live screen printing and events. The opening night will see Mr Doodle create a special one-off live mural directly onto a gallery wall, responding to new prints produced by Harvey Lloyd especially for the exhibition.

The exhibition continues Look Again Newhaven’s growing programme of ambitious cultural activity in the town, following the widely celebrated Supergraphics Festival in 2024 and the hugely popular Bruce Asbestos exhibition in 2025 and Community of Kindness in 2026.
