Lewes Town Council The parish authority for Lewes, East Sussex and responsible for allotments, benches, bus stops, CCTV and we offer community grants.

We manage Lewes Town Hall, All Saints Centre and Malling Community Centre and Lewes Priory, the Pells and Landport Bottom. Lewes Town Council is one of the 300 largest of the 10,000-or-so parish councils in England and Wales, with expenditure budgeted at just over £1million. It is the successor to Lewes Borough Council, which was incorporated in 1881. We are based at the Town Hall, in the High Street, which has been the home of Lewes’ local council since 1893.

We are so exited that Priory School's Artwave exhibition 'Pattern & Pigment' opens today at 9am. An inspiring exhibition celebrating creativity, colour and community. Pattern & Pigment showcases a vibrant collection of artwork created by pupils from Lewes Priory School, alongside pieces developed during Priory’s outreach workshops with local primary schools. Featuring bold patterns, imaginative designs and collaborative artworks, the exhibition highlights the creativity and artistic talent of local students. Visitors are invited to explore a joyful display of colour, texture and expression created through a range of artistic techniques and mediums.

🌱🏆 Celebrating Lewes' Allotment Champions! 🏆🌱

Lewes Town Council is delighted to congratulate all the winners of the 2026 Allotment Awards, which recognise the hard work, creativity and dedication of allotment holders across our six allotment sites.

Despite a challenging growing season that brought late frosts, heavy rain and prolonged dry spells, our allotment community has once again produced an inspiring array of productive plots, wildlife habitats, creative features and home-grown produce.

This year's awards celebrated achievements across a range of categories, including Best Kept Plot, Best Newcomer's Plot, Best Wildlife Pond, Best Scarecrow, Best Trug of Produce, Oddest Vegetable and Recycled Feature. We were also delighted to see fantastic entries in the children's categories, showcasing the next generation of growers and nature enthusiasts.

A huge thank you to everyone who entered, as well as our allotment officers, Julie and Brian, and this year's judges for their support throughout the year. The quality of entries was outstanding, and the judges were impressed by the care, commitment and ingenuity on display across the allotment community.

👏 Congratulations to all of this year's winners and commendation recipients, and thank you to everyone helping to keep Lewes' allotments thriving.

📸 Stories Seen Through A Glass Plate: Working Lewes returns this September!

From 11 September to 5 October 2026, the Edward Reeves Photography Archive lightboxes will once again illuminate the streets of Lewes with a fascinating exhibition celebrating the town's rich working history.

Stories Seen Through A Glass Plate: Working Lewes showcases historic photographs from the Edward Reeves Archive, telling the stories of Lewes townsfolk at work over a period of 100 years. Displayed on lightboxes throughout Lewes town centre, the exhibition offers a unique glimpse into everyday working lives and the resilient community spirit that has helped shape our town through the decades.

Presented by the Edward Reeves Archive in association with the London College of Communication at UAL and Edward Reeves Photography, the exhibition can be explored across Lewes High Street, Cliffe High Street and the surrounding area.

📍 Accompanying exhibition at the Edward Reeves Studio

Spanning 170 years of photography, a special exhibition at the Edward Reeves Studio will showcase images drawn from the business's vast and varied archive. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see the unique daylight studio and enjoy its iconic castle views.

🍰 A Sweet Way to Support Local Children 🍰

Lewes Town Council is pleased to share this wonderful fundraiser from Pippa's Group, a much-loved local charity nursery based in Landport, Lewes.

For many years, Pippa's Group has provided a nurturing and inclusive environment where children can learn, play and thrive. Their broad curriculum, including an inspiring Forest School programme, helps children build confidence, develop social skills and discover the world around them. As a charity, they are also able to offer support to children who may need a little extra help along the way.

Now, the team is raising funds for some new outdoor toys and play equipment, and they're doing it in the tastiest way possible... with a homemade cake sale! 🍰🧁

From Victoria sponge and chocolate cake to lemon loaf, cookies and chocolate cornflake nests, there is something for everyone. Better still, delivery is available on Sunday 13 September.

Every purchase will help create more opportunities for outdoor play and learning for local children.

Really pleased to be invited to open the 19th Lewes Societies Fair!

Brilliant annual event showcasing many of the brilliant clubs, societies, charities and groups that Lewes is so fortunate to have. Greta to meet them all and understand the many and varies ways in which they contribute to the well-being and character of the Town.

Big thank-you to Ruth O'Keeffe and others for organising, to Friends of Lewes for sponsoring, to Southover Bonfire for providing refreshements, and to all of the societies for showing off their work to visitors.

First night of Artwave! 🎉

Love this brilliant festival, showcasing the amazing artists and makers that we have in and around Lewes. In it's 33rd year apparently, and on until 20th September.

And lovely to start this year's event in the excellent Star Brewery Gallery with some beautiful work by local artists. Thanks for inviting me. 😊

🎉🌍 Celebrate Black History Month in Lewes! 🌍🎉

Lewes Town Council is delighted to support this year's Family Fun Day for Black History Month, taking place at All Saints Centre, Lewes.

This free, drop-in event promises an afternoon and evening of music, culture, creativity and community, with something for all ages to enjoy.

There will be:
🥁 African drumming workshops and taster sessions with Batafon Arts
💃 African dance workshops led by Ali Baba from Batafon Arts
📖 Children's storytelling
🎤 Poetry, singing and an open mic session
🎨 Children's arts and crafts activities
🍛 Delicious food available throughout the day, including jerk chicken, rice and peas, jollof rice and more

🎶 The headline performance comes from the amazing Liz Ikamba and Band, bringing the celebrations to a close with two live sets from 5pm.

Estimated programme: 🕐 1pm – African drumming workshop/tasters
🕑 2pm – African dance workshop
🕒 3pm – Children's storytelling and open mic
🕔 5pm – Liz Ikamba and Band

🚆 The organisers recommend travelling by train where possible. Lewes Railway Station is just a five-minute walk from the venue, making it a convenient and sustainable way to attend.

This event is funded by Lewes Town Council as part of Black History Month and reflects this year's theme, "Honouring Our Communities", celebrating the people, networks and everyday contributions that help shape and support British society.

🌿🦋 Calling all young nature enthusiasts! 🦋🌿

Lewes Town Council is pleased to share an opportunity from the South Downs National Park for young people aged 14 to 16 to become a South Downs Junior Ranger.

Junior Rangers help make a difference to nature recovery and climate action while developing practical conservation skills, meeting like-minded people and spending time outdoors in the beautiful South Downs.

Participants can: ✅ Learn new skills
✅ Support nature conservation projects
✅ Meet others who care about the environment
✅ Contribute towards the Volunteering section of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award
✅ Enhance future UCAS or apprenticeship applications

📍 Location: Eastern Area of the South Downs National Park
📅 Sessions: 18 October, 8 November and 6 December 2026

If you know a young person who is passionate about nature and wants to take positive action for the environment, this could be the perfect opportunity.
