This week's is Elphick & Son Ltd shop at number 18 Cliffe High Street.
The horticultural business was founded by George Elphick in 1823 and it was one of the oldest family-run businesses in Sussex when it closed in 2003. It gradually expanded from farm supplies and seeds into garden and pet supplies and at the height of its success it had five branches, two in Lewes, one in Seaford, one in Crowborough and one in Eastbourne.
They often had famous customers including actors, politicians, gardeners and titled lords.
Every year from 1932 the shop held an annual show in Lewes, with prizes for the best flowers and vegetables grown from Elphick's seeds.
Anthony Elphick, the founder's great-grandson donated the family's archive to the Garden Museum on Lambeth Palace Road in London.
