We have a number of fun family events happening across our properties this half term and Halloween!

From 26-30 October 2026 Lewes Castle & Museum, Michelham Priory House & Gardens, Anne of Cleves House, and Fishbourne Roman Palace & Gardens will be providing a number of entertaining, interactive activities across the week.

- Roman Army Week at Fishbourne Roman Palace: Young recruits and their families can immerse themselves in a week of thrilling activities designed for aspiring Roman soldiers.

- Halloween at Michelham Priory House & Gardens: Wednesday 28 October are ghost walks, Halloween arts and crafts, and plenty of horror filled fun like the broomstick derby. From 27–30 October there’s a spooky Halloween trail and spooky colouring to be done in the beautiful historic surroundings of Michelham Priory.

- Halloween Adventures at Lewes Castle & Museum: Follow the Pumpkin Trail, hunt for hidden letters and unscramble them to reveal the secret word! There’s also arts and crafts, with magical storytelling sessions with Trevor on selected dates.

- Halloween Adventures at Anne of Cleves House: Follow the Witches’ Potion Trail and discover what you can find along the way! Trevor will also be joining for more magical storytelling.

This October half term come to Lewes Castle & Museum and take part in our Halloween inspired activities, for all the family!
🎃 Explore the castle grounds with our pumpkin trail
📖 Trevor will be regaling us with stories on Monday 26th October 11am - 2pm
👻 Uncover your crafting abilities and make something to take home with you (Tuesday 27th - Thursday 29th 11am - 3pm)

We're open every day across the half term week from 10am - 5pm. The castle will close at 4pm with last entry at 3.30pm but the museum will stay open until 5pm.

You may remember that, at the start of the year, we shared the story of our St Andrews model being lovingly rebuilt after it was stolen thanks to the generosity of Dave Jarrett. Well, there’s more good news to share! 🎨

Dave has been busy once again, helping to restore even more details on our town model and bringing some of its much-loved features back to life.

The wooden bridge has been repaired, repainted and carefully glued back into place, Southover Grange has had its windows returned, and a chimney has also been restored🏡

These might be small details, but they make a big difference to the overall model, helping to bring Lewes’s historic buildings to life for our visitors.

A huge thank you to Dave for his continued hard work, skill and generosity. We’re incredibly grateful for the time and care he has put into preserving our town model for everyone to enjoy! ❤️

We're looking for maintenance volunteers who can work alongside our maintenance team to ensure that Lewes Castle & Museum, and Anne of Cleves House are carefully maintained, presented and looked after for future generations. Basic DIY skills are helpful but not necessary!

As September draws to a close, the signs of a new season are all around us🍂

Nearly 1,000 years ago, autumn would have brought its own familiar rhythm to Lewes. With the harvest gathered, attention turned towards the colder months ahead – storing food, gathering fuel and making preparations for winter.

Life was much more closely shaped by the changing seasons than it is for many of us today, and autumn was an important time of preparation for communities across the medieval landscape.

All these centuries later, our Castle is watching another autumn unfold over the town below🏰

What did autumn taste like nearly 1,000 years ago? 🍎

As the harvest came in across the landscape surrounding our Castle, attention turned to making the most of what had been grown and gathered.

Grain was an essential part of the medieval diet, used to make staples such as bread and ale, while seasonal fruits and other produce could be eaten fresh or preserved for the colder months ahead.

Without modern refrigeration or year-round access to the foods we take for granted today, the changing seasons had a much greater influence on what was available to eat.

High above Lewes, the Castle has witnessed almost 1,000 autumns – and enormous changes in the way people below its walls have lived, worked and eaten🏰
