The modernist home and studio of the painters Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Charleston was a gathering point for some of the 20th century’s most radical artists, writers and thinkers known collectively as the Bloomsbury group. It is where they came together to imagine society differently, and has always been a place where art and experimental thinking are at the centre of everyday life. Today, we

present a dynamic year-round programme of exhibitions, events and festivals. We believe in the power of art, in all its forms, to provoke new ways of thinking and living.

This week is and we want to take a moment to say thank you ❤️

Over 160 volunteers give nearly 7,000 hours each year to volunteer in the house, galleries and at our festivals, welcoming visitors, sharing their knowledge and bringing Charleston to life for everyone who walks through the door.

To every volunteer, we’re grateful for every hour you have given. Charleston wouldn’t be Charleston without you 🫶

We sat down with Melissa Auf der Maur ahead of her conversation to reflect on her time in the 90s alt-rock scene and in the band ‘Hole’.

Melissa joined essayist and translator on stage to discuss her new book, ‘Vocal Break’ and talk about rebellion, the power of women’s voices and the women who have defied genre, capitalism and sexism through sound.

Tomorrow is the final day of Charleston Festival 2026 – why not make the most of the bank holiday and catch an event or two?

How do you hide when your body is the evidence?

PURGE is a blazing new piece of writing from one of the major poets of our time: T S Eliot prize winner and author of C+NTO and Maryville, Joelle Taylor.

PURGE will premiere at Charleston Festival and be performed live by Taylor for the first time in a blistering encounter with the audience.

This is the fifth in the series of monologues commissioned by Charleston, following Benedict Lombe, Inua Ellams, Bryony Kimmings and Travis Alabanza.

Written in the weeks before the festival, Taylor taps into the fear felt by visibly q***r people against the backdrop of the rise of the far right.

Radical Ink
Paterson Joseph, Joely Richardson, Anna Chancellor, Anton Lesser, Harry Lloyd and Holly Dawson.

📖 Hogarth Press blazed a trail across 20th century publishing, publishing 527 books and giving voice to some of the most dazzling and innovative works of the era.

From Virginia Woolf’s Orlando to T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, from Sigmund Freud to E. M. Forster, it reshaped literature and the reading world.

This Wednesday evening at Charleston Festival, six of our most captivating performers bring these works vividly to life, capturing the press’s bold, unconventional and politically charged spirit – a reminder of the enduring power of literature in a turbulent world.

Visit our exhibition 'Virginia Woolf and the Hogarth Press' to discover more and see the exceptional work created. This exhibition is created in partnership with the Gordon Square Society, Antwerp.

Adam Buxton

Adam Buxton has spent his career making things his own way.
In conversation with Miranda Sawyer, he'll reflect on the wild west of 1990s TV, life in a comedy partnership, creating a genre-defining podcast by accident, and the pros and cons of keeping a spreadsheet of the arguments you have with your partner.
