I was in the hall for Andy Burnham’s powerful and emotional speech and I came away feeling hopeful about what we can achieve for Sussex. 🌹
Andy talked about the things every family and business depends on: a good home, affordable energy, clean water, care when you need it, and opportunities for young people.
✅ Clean water. He promised new powers for mayors to hold water companies to account. If elected, I’d use them to challenge Southern Water and push for cleaner seas and rivers.
✅ Good homes. More council housing, stronger powers to bring empty homes back into use, action on poor quality rented homes and long overdue leasehold reform.
✅ Lower costs and better connections. VAT comes off electricity bills today, and single bus fares will be capped at £2 throughout 2027. His plans for the energy grid matter to Sussex businesses that want to grow, too.
✅ Care and opportunity. Andy set out his ambition for a National Care Service and better routes into work for young people.
As a former mayor, Andy understands what local leaders can achieve when they have the powers to act. He has the experience to deliver, and he wants to give mayors more power to shape the places they serve.
What really stayed with me was Andy’s determination to give places more power to shape their own future. As a former mayor, he knows what can be achieved when local leaders have the powers to act.
That’s what I want to do for Sussex: bring people together to improve our buses, connect people with jobs and opportunities, and create the conditions for our communities and businesses to grow and succeed.
I’m ready to do my part, from coast to countryside.
