9 May 2022 – The Poor Law in Lewes – “A measure of extreme harshness & cruelty”?

Mary Rudling’s talk for Lewes History Group covers the period 1800-1860 and considers the profile of the poor and the support they received before and after 1834. Was it “A measure of extreme harshness & cruelty”?

Mary explains, “Many Lewes residents were opposed to interference from the government in London when the New Poor Law was implemented and there was a difficult relationship between local officials and the Poor Law Commissioners.”
She will compare poor relief in Lewes with relief in more rural parishes in the Weald and on the Downs and will include case studies of individual paupers and officials.

Reliving the Battle of Lewes

For a return to live meetings Lewes History Group welcomes Jeff Southgate and Francis Burrows with their companions from the Lewes-based re-enactment group ‘Swords of Albion’. They will bring back to life the knights, their arms and how they fought the battle at Lewes in May 1264.

Jeff and Francis will talk about the lead up to the Battle of Lewes 1264 and its main combatants. Simon de Montfort, Henry III and other key characters fought in the battle taking the sides of the Royalists or the Barons. Jeff says, “We will focus on the clothing, arms, equipment and most importantly, how the weapons were used in combat.”

Francis explains, “The detailed history will be left behind as we show you the fighting styles and brutality of the 13th Century battlefield and street fighting that happened at Lewes. You will get a preview demonstration of how the re-enactment will be done for the Battle of Lewes event in the town on 14th & 15th May 2022; the UK’s only battle re-enactment happening on the very streets where the fighting took place.”

Monday 14 Mar 2022 - 7.30 on Zoom
A Sussex Scrapbook

‘A Sussex Scrapbook’ is an intriguing miscellany of Sussex history, anecdotes and folklore. Chris Horlock’s LHG talk includes a look at the Priest House in West Hoathly, the so-called 'house of witchcraft,' the Long Man of Wilmington and his creation, plus the legend of the Knuckor Lake monster which terrorised the Lyminster area near Arundel in Saxon times.
Also included are some famous people associated with the county like the woman who helped write the king's Christmas speech of 1939.
A number of totally authentic and well-documented accounts of visions in the sky over Sussex are also recalled, including, in July 1662, a battle being fought over Burwash. These are just some of the subjects covered. Expect the unusual, the off-beat and bizarre!

Farming & the Ouse Valley Landscape 1770 – 1940

For February, Lewes History Group’s Zoom talk by Dr Sue Berry covers the changing management of farming in the Ouse Valley south of Lewes and its impact on the chalk landscape c1770-1940
Many landowners and tenants invested heavily in improvements which they hoped to increase agricultural output. Bigger farms, drainage schemes including altering the course of the river, and eventually in housing schemes and a dairy. But outside influences such as changes in state policy and the arrival of cheaper imported food eventually resulted in major changes in ownership and farming. We shall look at key themes in a saga which affected many chalk landscapes.

Blue people

“I like the simple pose. They create a lovely story between them” - Sarah Money

The unique movement and form of the long blue figures allows the eye of the observer to follow the shapes and angles.

This piece is made from a smooth clay which is then fired at a high temperature in a kiln and then glazed.
