I’ve always tried to take a genuinely cross-party approach when it comes to women in politics.
That’s why I’ve supported initiatives like Elect Her, not just Labour-specific programmes, because I believe women succeed when we support one another across political divides and create a culture where women can genuinely flourish in civic life.
Which is why recent events have felt deeply disappointing.
Cllr Sadie Billing has been a diligent Vice Chair: attending every briefing, building experience through chairing the Letchworth Community Forum, and putting real time and effort into preparing for leadership. She has done all of this with a newborn baby on her hip.
The man ultimately given the role, through a Tory-backed Liberal Democrat vote, did not undertake that same apprenticeship.
For as long as most of us can remember, the Chairship has passed from Chair to Vice Chair. Until now.
What frustrates me most is the disconnect between rhetoric and action. I am tired of hearing speeches about supporting women in civic life, improving political culture, and encouraging women into public life, only to watch those principles disappear when decisions are actually being made.
Supporting women is not just backing a ribbon campaign or putting forward a motion you can put on a political CV. It is what you do when a capable woman who has done the work is standing in front of you, ready to lead.
Politics will always involve disagreement and competition. I understand that. But if we want people to believe our words about representation and inclusion, our actions have to match them.
Last night I was nominated for Chair of the Council, having proudly served as Vice Chair over the past year. Sadly, I was unsuccessful, and I also narrowly missed out on continuing as Vice Chair, losing both votes by just two votes.
I will be honest — I am gutted, as I had really hoped to continue serving in one of those roles.
Congratulations to those elected, and I genuinely wish them well.
I became a councillor to support my community and local residents, and that will always remain my focus. I am incredibly proud to continue as Chair of the Letchworth Area Forum and look forward to continuing to work closely with residents.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me — it means a lot.
