Looks fantastic!

That's all the bunting up in the town centre now.
Around the start of June you will start to see the flowers going out.
This year Da Barn and COPE Ltd will be supplying flowers and looking after them throughout the summer.

Pick up your dog poo!
Lerwick Community supported this worthwhile project by selecting winners and funding prizes. We also helped source the funding from the Shetland Community Benefit Fund Ltd which made it all possible. Well done to Billy Mycock and his Council colleagues, Sound Primary School, and especially to the very clever and determined bairns who designed the posters. Check out seven different posters as you go about town, and dog owners remember you can all be P**perheroes 🙂

Signs designed by pupils at Sound Primary School have this week been placed around parts of Lerwick to raise awareness of dog fouling and encourage positive behaviour by dog owners.

Dog fouling has long been a concern raised by Lerwick Community Council and pupils at Sound Primary School were equally keen to tackle the topic. Over recent months, a local campaign has been developed involving the pupils with support from the Shetland Community Benefit Fund, and the Council’s Environmental Health Team.

Senior pupils at Sound Primary School took part in educational sessions to highlight the health and environmental risks associated with dog fouling. Pupils were given creative freedom to design bold, eye catching artwork to help deliver clear messages to the community, producing over 70 imaginative designs from which seven final designs were chosen.

Local graphic design specialists Art Machine helped to transform these designs into outdoor posters, with young people from the Bridges youth project and the Council’s Estate Operations team cutting, painting and preparing backing boards. The poster boards have now been installed at key locations throughout Lerwick.

Louise Moar, Team Leader – Environmental Health, Shetland Islands Council, said: “We were delighted to collaborate with Sound Primary School to produce posters that are now displayed throughout the community.

"The children were highly engaged and enthusiastic, and the standard of artwork they created was exceptional. It was a real challenge to select the final designs and we hope they will make a positive impact locally.”

News from Shetland Community Benefit Fund Ltd
Viking Community Fund Apprenticeship Support Fund for Small Businesses will close on the 31st of May 2026.

The fund can support small (15 employees or less) Shetland businesses or social enterprises with the costs of taking on an apprentice and is generally used as a contribution towards their wages. As the fund was created to support the VCF Strategic Priority of ‘Encouraging Young People to Remain/Return to Shetland’, the apprentice being employed needs to be between the ages of 16 and 25 when the apprenticeship begins.

In 2025, the VCF accepted applications from businesses with apprentices entering their 2nd and 3rd years. However, for the 2026 round, we will only be accepting applications from businesses taking on an apprentice this year, i.e. they are entering the 1st year of their apprenticeship.

The guidelines and application form can be accessed on the SCBF website - Apprenticeships, Bursary & Training Funds Please note this fund is not an online application and we ask that the application form is downloaded, completed, and returned to SCBF via email along with the requested supporting documents – [email protected]
