Knab Shetland

Knab Shetland A thriving space in Lerwick, Shetland, with community at its heart. Some plans for the site may be subject to change as the development progresses.

The Knab is a peninsula full of potential and like the rest of Shetland, it is teeming with optimism and overflowing with opportunity. The redevelopment of the site, following the relocation of Anderson High School, will create a vibrant, thriving space which has community at its heart, contributing to Shetland’s plans for a net zero future, which both energises the islands and propels the country

’s renewables revolution. The Knab sits at the south end of Lerwick, just a five-minute walk from the town centre offering huge potential for further housing in Lerwick with additional proposals for a creative hub, student accommodation and other public spaces, with scenic walks and nature on the doorstep. It has been a long-standing aspiration to develop the site into a thriving community which showcases the benefits and opportunities of island life. The Knab Redevelopment will be supported with investment of up to £9.6 million from the Scottish Government as part of the Islands Growth Deal. The Islands Growth Deal is a ten-year package of investment that will seek to drive economic growth and the creation of sustainable jobs across Shetland, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides. The Islands Deal vision is to harness the unique assets of Shetland, Orkney, and the Outer Hebrides to create world class, innovative and globally focused industries that will help address the islands’ severe demographic challenges and strengthen the distinct and important contribution our Islands make to the economic vitality and international reputation of Scotland and the United Kingdom.

With its distinctive Art Deco-influenced facade, the category-B listed Janet Courtney Hostel is one of the four retained buildings at the Knab - but who was Janet Courtney, and how did the building come to be named after her?

This blog from Angus Johnson at Shetland Museum and Archives shines a light on the woman behind the name.

A round of applause for the winners of our schools 'Design a House' competition 👏 🏠

The competition was sent out to schools last summer asking pupils to come up with their dream house design and to promote and raise awareness of the Knab Redevelopment to a younger audience.

Last week, members of the project team have been in schools doing a short talk with the pupils and presenting them with their Knab merchandise in the form of a stationery set for everyone who took part, with the winner and runners up receiving a gift voucher.

Thank you to everyone who took part!

Our latest blog offers a fascinating insight into the history of Janet Courtney, and why the Janet Courtney Hostel was named after the Lincolnshire-born scholar.

The building stands as a remnant of Shetland's educational past and the buildings presence on the Knab is a reminder of Shetland's commitment to education, progress and community spirit.
