The Shetland Fishermenโ€™s Association (the real SFA!) has today unveiled its official squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring some very recognisable names from the world of both football and fishing.

๐‘บ๐‘ญ๐‘จ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿคโšฝ๏ธ๐‘บ๐‘ญ๐‘จ

Shared captaincy of the squad is split between young shellfish supremo (j)๐€ ๐‘๐Ž๐๐„๐‘๐“๐’๐Ž๐ and industry quota queen (m)๐€๐๐ƒ๐˜ ๐‘๐Ž๐๐„๐‘๐“๐’๐Ž๐, ably supported by teammates ๐‘ ๐‚๐‡๐‘๐ˆ๐’๐“๐ˆ๐„ and ๐‘ ๐’๐“๐„๐–๐€๐‘๐“.

โ€ข Vice-captain (j)A Robertson (KIAMA) โ€“ a steady hand at the helm, having worked with many leaders in his career, itโ€™s now his chance to skipper the squad to success

โ€ข Vice-captain (m)ANDY ROBERTSON (SFPO) โ€“ every great team needs a hard-working statistician, with a keen eye for quota swaps and transfers

โ€ข R Christie (OPPORTUNE) โ€“ key to a well paired midfield partnership, he knows his way around a net and is sure to secure a good haul of goals

โ€ข R Stewart (ANTARCTIC) โ€“ an efficient and forward thinking mid-water trawler with a history of drifting to help out in other positions

Other key players included in the squad are:

โ€ข John McFinn
โ€ข Billy Gill-mour
(making a surprise comeback from injury, all he needed was a good feed o spoots)
โ€ข Aaron Hake-y
โ€ข Che Haddams
โ€ข Keiran Tear-net

Around the world, supporters of Shetland seafood can rest assured that no amount of World Cup excitement this summer will distract Shetland fishermen from continuing to supply world class healthy, sustainable and delicious fish and shellfish ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฆ€๐Ÿฆž๐Ÿฆ‘๐ŸŒŠ

Thanks to our SFA squad for being game for a good sport, and please โ€“ if you can think of any Scottish football/Shetland fishing names that weโ€™ve missed out โ€“ be sure to let us know in the comments!

"Government policy needs to be on point: it needs to look beyond just tonnes of fish landed. It has to care about who actually landed those tonnes of fish, and if the profit from that fish stays here โ€“ supporting families and communities." ๐ŸŸ

In this Viewpoint piece, Shetland Fishermenโ€™s Association executive officer Daniel Lawson takes a look at the state of the fishing industry.

He writes that fishing communities are "straight-up cooked unless our new government locks in".
