We’ve been reviewing how we connect with our followers on Facebook and we’ve decided that the best approach is to have just one account that covers all the properties in Herefordshire. You’ll still get regular updates and news about Croft Castle but there will also be news from Berrington Hall, Brockhampton and The Weir Garden.

To do this we’re going to close this account and ask you to follow the National Trust Herefordshire account here instead. It’s run by the same people who cover Croft Castle. This account will be closing on 31 May.

Thank you for following and supporting us here - we would love to see you on the National Trust Herefordshire account. Your generous support of the National Trust places in Herefordshire enables us to continue caring for nature, beauty and history at each of these unique and special places. Thank you.

Free archaeology talk on Saturday 30 May at Stretton Sugwas Village Hall. Email [email protected] to secure your place.

Following last year’s successful archaeological excavation at NT The Weir Garden in Herefordshire, Midlands and East of England Archaeologist Viviana will deliver a public talk to share the results of the excavation, including results from specialist assessments, to volunteers, local residents and local groups in Stretton Sugwas on Saturday 30 May.

The excavation, carried out during the Festival of Archaeology in 2025, aimed to characterise the nature of a Romano-British double-ditched enclosure, first identified by aerial photography in the 1970s and later confirmed by geophysical survey at Old Weir Farm.

The project was driven by the desire to research and preserve by record a site threatened by river erosion and climate change. Equally it was designed to offer a safe and accessible place for volunteers and local groups to participate in archaeological research, contributing to the archaeological and cultural story of their community.

Viviana says “This is a special project and one that took time to plan properly because we wanted to make sure the event was specifically programmed and delivered to and for local residents, local groups and our funders who interact with this wonderful landscape daily. The historic and cultural landscapes that surround us are often challenging to read because there are no obvious clues on the ground, or because they are not accessible.

These types of events are extremely important as they give us an opportunity to tell, or remind of, forgotten, lost or untold stories of past societies and landscapes; to connect sites through research but also to connect people and places with the conservation and nature restoration work we are delivering”.

Please email [email protected] if you would like to attend.

It’s National Walking Month, and today we’re celebrating the walks at Croft Castle. Top tip - don't miss the bluebells at this time of year.

From wide‑open countryside to the colour and calm of historic gardens, walking at Croft offers the best of Herefordshire. Explore 1,500 acres of woodland, parkland and farmland, with five waymarked routes leading you past ancient trees, the Iron Age hillfort at Croft Ambrey, and the wildlife‑rich Fishpool Valley.

As the paths draw you closer to the castle, step into the walled garden and wander early‑19th‑century paths through sweeping seasonal borders, heritage apple orchards and even a small vineyard producing crisp white wine.

With restored glasshouses, productive vegetable plots and views that shift between designed landscapes and wild nature, every walk here tells a story.

🚖Car parking (including Blue Badge spaces) and Visitor Reception with walk information
☕Café and second hand bookshop
🚾Toilets including facilities with accessible adaptions
👣Mixed terrain which includes accessible paths in the walled garden, as well as uneven areas in the parkland.
🐶Dogs welcome on leads across all outside areas and in a designated area in the cafe.

Our four‑legged visitors are fully embracing the Easter holidays 🐾 Bunny ears optional… but strongly encouraged 🐰

The Easter trail at Croft runs until 12 April. Unfortunately, we we’ve run out of Easter eggs sooner than planned – with only a few clutches left, we may have run out by the time you come to visit.
