🔥 Meet the Team Behind the Cadets 🔥

Our instructors and volunteers bring huge energy, experience, and plenty of laughs to cadet nights every week.

We asked a few of the team some quick-fire questions so you can get to know the faces behind the helmets 👇

🚒 Maddie – Volunteer

Favourite food: Sushi! 🍣

Favourite drill: Breathing Apparatus in the smokehouse

Reason for doing cadets: Was a cadet for 6 years and love it so much that I didn’t want to leave!

Funniest cadet memory: Going up the ALP (aerial ladder platform) and being told it had broken and we’d have to climb down… luckily it hadn’t actually! 😅

Interesting fact about you: Worked for a medical company that covered Manchester City and the Co-op Live

🚒 Jono – Instructor

Favourite food: Thai green curry… or salt and vinegar crisps! Has been known to polish off a tube of salt and vinegar Pringles in 10 minutes 😄

Favourite drill: Confined ladder pitch or BA (Breathing Apparatus) search and rescue

Funniest cadet memory: A bunded foam drill at Coalville that turned into a bit of a foam party (all safely supervised!) — like a bubble bath in a swimming pool 🫧

Interesting fact about you: Lived in New Zealand for 10 years and was a firefighter there for 5 years 🇳🇿🚒

It’s the people, personalities, and passion behind the scenes that make Fire Cadets such a brilliant place to learn, laugh, and grow 🚒🔥

Wow, wow, wow! 🚒🔥

As of midday today (22/5), our amazing cadets have already raised an incredible £368 for the Fire Fighters Charity thanks to the generosity of cadet friends, families, and the wider public.

This week, cadets at Coalville, Central and Western have been practising their hose running skills ahead of the huge 999 Fire Cadets Challenge, which starts on Tuesday 2nd June.

Over six sessions after half-term, our cadets — supported by on-duty watches — will be aiming to roll out and make up an incredible 999 lay-flat hoses in support of the charity that helps members of the UK fire family through health and wellbeing challenges.

Thank you so much to everybody who has donated and supported the challenge so far. Please keep sharing our fundraising link and helping us spread the word 💙

Our cadets are taking on the 999 Fire Cadets Challenge in support of the Fire Fighters Charity 🚒

Across our three units — Coalville, Central and Western — cadets will be working alongside on-duty watches to roll out and make up an incredible 999 lay-flat hoses over six sessions after half-term.

This challenge will take teamwork, determination, energy and plenty of enthusiasm, all while raising money for a charity that supports firefighters, fire personnel and their families when they need it most.

Please support our very dedicated and hardworking cadets by sponsoring them and helping us raise as much as possible for this worthwhile cause.

https://www.justgiving.com/page/leicestershire-fire-cadets-lfrs-2?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL&utm_campaign=lc_frp_share_transaction_fundraiser_page_launched Every donation and share makes a difference. 🚒💙

This week our Fire Cadets have been creating water safety posters, helping to share potentially life-saving messages with other young people.

The cadets discussed the dangers of entering open water and how important it is to make safe choices around lakes, rivers, canals and reservoirs — especially as the weather gets warmer.

They also focused on the vital Float to Live advice. If you find yourself in difficulty in the water:

Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
Relax and try to control your breathing
Move your hands to help you stay afloat
Once breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety

We can all help prevent tragedies by encouraging people to stay out of the water where possible, but education is key in helping people know what to do if the worst happens.

Fantastic work by our cadets creating eye-catching posters and sharing important safety messages with their peers. 🌊👏

Someone in trouble in the water?

Remember:

➡ Phone 999 to get help 📲🚒

➡ Tell them to stay calm and float on their back

➡ Throw rescue equipment to help them float 🛟📿

Never enter the water to attempt a rescue. Knowing what to do can save a life.

Our Cadets have been learning about water safety this week and how to use throw lines correctly and safely.

🔥 Instructor & Volunteer Q&A 🔥

This week we caught up with two of our amazing team members, Nicole and Dale, to find out a bit more about them 👇

🚒 Nicole – Volunteer (6 years)

Favourite food: Chinese

Favourite drill: Improvised dam (creating a water storage using any equipment to hand)

Reason for doing cadets: Was a cadet… and never left!

Funniest cadet memory: Watching Katherine (Cadet Leader) do the BA shuffle

Interesting fact about you: Superfan of the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team 🏒

🚒 Dale – Instructor

Favourite food: Pizza

Favourite drill: BA (Breathing Apparatus) — it’s not something you get to experience outside of the fire service

Reason for doing cadets: To give something back — and now my son attends, it’s a great way to spend quality time with him and the other cadets

Funniest cadet memory: Watching BA drills when cadets lose their sense of direction and end up anywhere!

Interesting fact about you: Coventry City fan — looking forward to seeing them receive their Championship trophy 🏆

A brilliant insight into the people behind the cadets and what makes our sessions so special 🚒🔥

Loving learning ladder leg lock!

Not a tongue twister… a lifesaver.

This week our cadets got hands-on learning the ladder leg lock — a simple but vital technique that frees up both hands when working at height. Whether it’s securing the ladder or operating a hosereel, it’s all about staying stable, in control, and focused on the task.

With the ladder footed and securely shored to the tower, and under the close supervision of our instructors at all times, cadets were able to practise safely and confidently.

It might look straightforward, but these safe working techniques are what keep our cadets safe while building confidence and real firefighting skills. 🔥👨‍🚒👩‍🚒

🐣🚒 Easter challenge accepted…

Our cadets have been egg-stremely busy putting their creativity (and teamwork!) to the test – designing and building a device to safely transport chocolate eggs from the first floor to the ground floor… without a single crack! 🍫🥚

It’s been no yolk either – think engineering, problem-solving, a bit of trial and error… and plenty of laughs along the way 😄

Some cracking designs, a few eggs-pected mishaps… but lots of success (and maybe a little sneaky taste-testing 👀

🚒 Cadets on the Drill Yard! 🪜

Our cadets have been getting hands‑on with ladder skills — learning how to move, carry, stow, pitch, and climb safely and confidently.

From clear communication to solid teamwork, they’re building the foundations of safe ladder work that every firefighter relies on.

Great effort, great attitudes, and great progress all round. Keep it up, cadets — every drill makes you stronger and safer! 👏🔥
