More visible policing is coming to market towns across Leicestershire.

Last week, Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews announced an agreement with Leicestershire Police Chief Constable David Sandall to deliver enhanced foot patrols using police officers and PCSOs.

The OPCC Partnerships Team recently attended the Sporting Communities Youth Innovation Conference, an event focused on youth safety.

The conference gave young people the opportunity to engage with a range of organisations and partners showcasing their work to keep communities safe. The team also invited attendees to experience a short e-safety video through our virtual reality headsets, which explores the importance of staying safe online when receiving their first mobile phone.

It was also a great opportunity to discuss the Community Action Programme, which supports young people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland by funding local crime prevention initiatives and diversionary activities. Alongside keynote speakers, the conference featured interactive workshops covering topics including online dating, and how online communities and personalised feeds can influence young people's identity and experiences. Attendees also heard directly from members of the Sporting Communities Youth Panel, ensuring young people's voices remained at the heart of discussions.

Rural Crime Action Week may be drawing to a close, but the work to tackle rural crime continues year-round.

Following his patrol with Leicestershire & Rutland Rural Policing Team earlier this week, Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews shares a message about the ongoing work to crack down on crime in rural communities.

As part of his Community Day during Rural Crime Action Week, the PCC joined PC Houghton from the Leicestershire & Rutland Rural Policing Team on patrol across Melton and Rutland.

During the afternoon, the PCC met local farmers who have benefited from enhanced security measures funded through the rural crime round of the Commissioner's Community Action Programme. Successful applications from a local parish council, Rutland Community Safety Partnership, and NFU have helped fund the distribution of DataTag forensic marking kits and Tick Trackers, protecting vehicles, machinery and equipment.

The PCC also met Joe, a Rutland farmer whose telehandler was stolen earlier this year before being recovered thanks to the Rural Policing Team and neighbouring police forces. Joe has since benefited from a PCC-funded Tick Tracker, providing an additional layer of security.

Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews visited the Melton and Rutland Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA) today for his Community Day.

This morning the PCC joined NPA Commander Inspector Rowan Paterson‑Bell on patrol in Melton Mowbray. It was an opportunity for the PCC to hear directly about the work the NPA Commander and his team have been delivering since Inspector Paterson‑Bell stepped into the role earlier this year.

✅ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘄𝗼𝗼𝗱

More than 450 free home security devices have been distributed to residents through the Police and Crime Commissioner's Prevent and Protect scheme across two successful collection events.

Held in Loughborough on 28th August and Thurmaston on 4th September, the events gave eligible residents the opportunity to collect a free WiFi CCTV camera, video doorbell or motion-sensor security light to help protect their homes from burglary.

The eligible postcode areas were identified using police data, targeting support at areas at increased risk of burglary.

Tackling neighbourhood crime is a key priority in the Police and Crime Plan, with the PCC committed to investing in practical crime prevention measures that help keep people and property safe.

Further Prevent and Protect events are being considered in areas where police data indicates crime prevention support is most needed. Details will be announced in due course.

𝗣𝗖𝗖 𝗥𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has now secured enhanced police patrols for market towns across Leicestershire, delivering on a key commitment to residents, businesses and local communities.

By December, Market Harborough, Hinckley, Loughborough, Coalville, Melton Mowbray and Ashby-de-la-Zouch will benefit from additional police patrols focused on tackling persistent concerns around anti-social behaviour and shoplifting, boosting visibility and helping make town centres safer and more welcoming places to live, work and visit.

In May, Mr Matthews announced plans to improve community safety in the county's market towns, making clear he was prepared to commission an external provider if necessary to deliver the visible policing residents were calling for. As part of his process to find the most effective solution, he asked Chief Constable if the force could identify a solution that would meet those needs.

Following consideration of all available options, including private sector alternatives, Leicestershire Police will now deliver the enhanced patrols under a Service Level Agreement using police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). The arrangement will cost less than originally budgeted by the Commissioner, with savings reinvested into further crime prevention initiatives across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

This week, we're supporting Rural Crime Action Week, highlighting the impact crime can have across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland's rural areas.

We'll be raising awareness of the issues affecting rural communities, highlighting the work of the Leicestershire & Rutland Rural Policing Team, sharing practical crime advice to help prevent rural crime and sharing updates from some of the projects funded through the Rural Crime round of the PCC's Community Action Programme.

The Fatal 4 are four of the most common factors linked to serious and fatal collisions: speeding, mobile phone use, not wearing a seatbelt and drink or drug driving.

Recent figures show that 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝟭𝟳% 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀. In addition, DVLA figures show that 𝟳𝟮,𝟲𝟲𝟮 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗴-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 on their licence.
