Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has now secured enhanced police patrols for market towns across Leicestershire, delivering on a key commitment to residents, businesses and local communities.

By December, Market Harborough, Hinckley, Loughborough, Coalville, Melton Mowbray and Ashby-de-la-Zouch will benefit from additional police patrols focused on tackling persistent concerns around anti-social behaviour and shoplifting, boosting visibility and helping make town centres safer and more welcoming places to live, work and visit.

In May, Mr Matthews announced plans to improve community safety in the county's market towns, making clear he was prepared to commission an external provider if necessary to deliver the visible policing residents were calling for. As part of his process to find the most effective solution, he asked Chief Constable if the force could identify a solution that would meet those needs.

Following consideration of all available options, including private sector alternatives, Leicestershire Police will now deliver the enhanced patrols under a Service Level Agreement using police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). The arrangement will cost less than originally budgeted by the Commissioner, with savings reinvested into further crime prevention initiatives across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Weโ€™re inviting views on new authorised professional practice (APP) for stalking or harassment.

This consultation will help shape national guidance for how forces across England and Wales respond - from identifying and investigating stalking to supporting and safeguarding victims.

It aims to ensure the final guidance is clear, practical and supports effective, victim-centred investigations.

Preventing crime and protecting local communities is a key priority for the PCC.

Through PCC funding, is supporting Leicestershire Police to carry out high-visibility patrols at car boot sales across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, helping to deter the sale of stolen goods, disrupt criminal activity and prevent offenders from profiting from crime.

This weekend, officers and PCSOs were at Measham & Moira Car Boot Sale as part of this ongoing work, engaging with traders and visitors while providing a visible policing presence.

Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews has today (25 August 2026) named David Sandall as his preferred candidate for the new Chief Constable of Leicestershire Police.

The announcement follows a robust and competitive selection process carried out in line with the College of Policingโ€™s recruitment requirements. This included assessments by both internal and external stakeholder groups and an in-depth presentation and formal interview.

The appointment will now be subject to a confirmation hearing by the Police and Crime Panel.

We're supporting this important railway safety message from PCSO Gaynor at Charnwood Police.

Recent footage from Great Central Railway in Quorn shows extremely dangerous behaviour on a bridge over the active heritage line. Entering spaces on or near railway infrastructure can have devastating consequences and puts lives at risk.

Police and Crime Commissioner Rupert Matthews recently visited Great Central Railway to discuss these safety concerns and the measures that have already been put in place to prevent incidents such as this. The footage serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved and the importance of staying away from railway tracks, bridges and safety barriers.

PCSO Gaynor and the local policing team continue to work closely with Great Central Railway and British Transport Police to promote railway safety and prevent harm.

If you're a parent, carer or guardian, please take a moment to speak with the children and young people in your care about the risks around railways.

โš ๏ธ Railway Safety Warning โš ๏ธ

๐Ÿš‹ I know I have posted about railway safety on several occasions, but this is the most alarming incident I have seen so far at the Great Central Railway bridge at Quorn.

๐Ÿ“น CCTV footage has been sent to me showing children climbing on top of the safety railings and one hanging off the wrong side of the railings (these railings as you can see are installed ON TOP of the bridge) if this was not dangerous enough this is while a train was passing underneath!! This behaviour is extremely dangerous!! - I have clearer images and will be visiting schools to try and locate who these children are. If this is your child, please speak to them immediately about the risks involved. The bridge is already a good height above the ground, and the fencing is intended to prevent falls. A slip or loss of balance could have devastating consequences, resulting in significant injury or even loss of life.

๐Ÿ’™ We work closely with the Great Central Railway and British Transport Police to promote rail safety and prevent incidents like this.
Please take a moment to speak to your children about railway safety. A simple conversation could prevent a tragedy.

Stay safe โ€“ PCSO 6130 Gaynor
