Transferring fostering agencies is a big decision and you deserve an agency that feels like it was worth the move.

At Compass Fostering, you get a dedicated local team, your own supervising social worker, and training and support that never leaves your side.

But there's something bigger behind you too: Compass Community. It's specialist expertise in fostering, residential care, education and therapeutic services, all working together. Because no child thrives on one person's effort alone - it takes a whole community around them.

In our recent posts, we’ve been exploring PACE: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy and how these approaches can help foster parents support children and young people.

We’ve explored P – Playfulness, A – Acceptance and C – Curiosity. Now we come to E – Empathy.

Empathy means trying to see things through a child’s eyes, even when we don’t agree with their behaviour or how they’ve responded.

It isn’t about trying to make their problems disappear or telling them everything will be okay. Sometimes, empathy simply means being there with them - acknowledging how they feel, offering comfort and helping them know they aren’t alone.

A PACE approach might sound like:
“That sounds really difficult. I can see why you’re feeling upset.”

By showing empathy, we communicate that their feelings matter and that we will be there alongside them, even during difficult moments 💛

Because feeling seen, heard and understood can help build the trust and connection that children need.

As the summer holidays come to an end, going back to school can feel like a big step for children and young people.

After the longest break of the school year, they may be facing a new class, new friends, and new routines to navigate - and that can feel overwhelming.

Our Therapeutic Practitioners have shared some helpful tips to support children as they return with confidence:

🌙 Reset routines: Gradually bring bedtime and morning routines back into place
💛 PACE it: Be Playful, Accepting, Curious and Empathetic when talking about any worries or concerns
🐢 Take it slow: Keep that first morning calm, relaxed and unhurried
😊 Keep it positive: Talk about seeing old friends, making new ones, and the subjects or activities they enjoy most

Most importantly, remember that every child is different. A little patience, reassurance and understanding can make a big difference.

In our recent posts, we’ve been exploring PACE: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy, looking at how each element can support children and young people in fostering.

We’ve explored P – Playfulness and A – Acceptance. Now it’s time for C – Curiosity.

Curiosity means wondering about why a child might be feeling or behaving the way they are, without placing judgement or blame.

Instead of asking, “Why did you do that?”, try approaching the situation with curiosity. Children don’t always understand their own behaviour or have the words to explain how they’re feeling.

A PACE approach might sound like:
“You seem upset. I wonder if you might be feeling tired?” or “I wonder what that was about?”
It’s about seeking to understand rather than seeking to punish. Looking beyond the behaviour to understand what might be going on underneath 💛

By approaching children with curiosity, we can help reduce tension, show that we want to understand them and build stronger, more trusting relationships.

In a recent post, we introduced PACE: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy - and explored what P, for Playfulness, means in fostering.

Now it’s time for A – Acceptance.

Acceptance is about accepting a child for who they are, without judgement. It means recognising and validating their feelings, experiences and behaviours, helping them to feel safe, valued and understood.

You might not always agree with how a child sees a situation, or how they express themselves, but accepting their feelings doesn’t mean agreeing with them. It means showing them that it’s okay to feel the way they do.

For example, if a child says, “Everyone hates me,” it can be tempting to respond with, “That’s not true!” Instead, a PACE approach might be: “I’m sorry you feel like everyone hates you. That must be really upsetting.”

By responding with understanding rather than trying to change how they feel, we can help children feel heard, understood and less alone. 💛

Because sometimes, understanding the child behind the behaviour is where the biggest difference begins.

If you haven’t done so already, take a look at Michelle Newman-Brown’s blog, which explains PACE and Acceptance in more detail: https://ow.ly/WkXF50ZBQAw
