In light of events in America, we should like to express our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of George Floyd. We should also like to state that we stand with the protestors, as they seek justice and change to a political system that has abused and repressed them, allowing murderers to go free whilst persecuting the vulnerable.

However we would also like to being attention to this issue closer to home. America is not the only country that from police brutality. Since 1990, 1741 individuals have died following contact with the Police. The overwhelming majority of the affected being members of BAME communities. Further, between 1995 and 2015, not a single police officer was prosecuted over the death of a black person in custody. This is not the only issue faced by Black and Asian Minority groups. Black people in Britain are overwhelmingly, 10 times so, more likely to be stopped and searched by police than white people. Asians are 3 times as likely to be searched. Black ethnic groups in the UK are stopped and searched at the highest rate of all ethnic groups in the UK.

Hi all,

Just to let everyone know, the Student's Union has opened the nomiations page for the Student Group Elections. This means that you can now run for next year's Committee. We have six positions open:

-Chair
-Vice Chair for Events
-Vice Chair for Campaigns
-Treasurer
-Secretary
-Wellbeing and Inclusion Ambassador

If you'd like to run, all you have to do is head on down to the Student's Union Website (https://www.leicesterunion.com/opportunities/societies/studentgroupelections/) and click through to the 'Student Group Elections' page. From there, you'll be able to see all the posts you're able to stand for, for each society you're a member of.

Then all you need to do is nominate yourself, and if you want, put forward a manifesto to let everyone know why they should vote for you! For most positions you can only hold one of them at a time, but you can be both the Wellbeing and Inclusion Ambassador and have another committee position if you like!

Nomiations run until Friday 13th March, so you have plenty of time to put yourself forward. If you have any questions, or want to ask the current committee for advice or support, contact us via email or on Facebook - we'll be more than happy to have a chat. Otherwise, we hope to see everyone at our next event, a Curry Night on the 10th - more details coming soon!

Good Luck to everyone running!
