In light of events in America, we should like to express our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of George Floyd. We should also like to state that we stand with the protestors, as they seek justice and change to a political system that has abused and repressed them, allowing murderers to go free whilst persecuting the vulnerable.
However we would also like to being attention to this issue closer to home. America is not the only country that from police brutality. Since 1990, 1741 individuals have died following contact with the Police. The overwhelming majority of the affected being members of BAME communities. Further, between 1995 and 2015, not a single police officer was prosecuted over the death of a black person in custody. This is not the only issue faced by Black and Asian Minority groups. Black people in Britain are overwhelmingly, 10 times so, more likely to be stopped and searched by police than white people. Asians are 3 times as likely to be searched. Black ethnic groups in the UK are stopped and searched at the highest rate of all ethnic groups in the UK.
