Did you know?

Saturnalia was ancient Rome’s most festive holiday, celebrated each December with gift-giving, candle-lighting, feasts, and even a reversal of social roles! During this holiday, normal rules were relaxed, masters served meals to their enslaved people, and the whole city took a break from work to enjoy fun and freedom.

Many traditions from Saturnalia like decorating with greenery, exchanging gifts, and celebrating light during the darkest days have echoes in winter holidays still observed today.

In the spirit of Saturnalia, the Friends of Jewry Wall have kindly left a gift for us at the Jewry Wall site. A small modern nod to the ancient tradition of sharing and generosity during this season

We are uncovering remarkable archaeology ahead of redevelopment at Leicester’s market place — including Roman buildings, medieval market surfaces, and the remains of a long-lost civic landmark.

📸 This image shows our team investigating the thick stone walls of a late medieval dungeon, likely part of the Gainsborough Chamber — a building that once stood in the market for 100s of years, used for shops, judicial and mayoral business, and a prison (!).

⛏️ Excavations are ongoing, and we’ll be sharing more discoveries soon! To read more on this visit: https://news.leicester.gov.uk/news-articles/2025/september/evidence-of-2-000-years-of-human-activity-found-on-market-site/
