Leicester’s Local Plan has now been formally adopted, following approval at a full council meeting earlier this year. The plan will help shape how the city develops up until 2036, including where new housing, jobs, schools, healthcare facilities and infrastructure will be built.
A Local Plan acts as the city’s long-term blueprint for development, and will influence future planning decisions across Leicester. It also sets standards around the quality of new developments, design and environmental targets.
The plan has already been examined by the Government’s Planning Inspectorate, and follows years of consultation, including five public consultations and five weeks of hearings, and debate involving residents, businesses and stakeholders.
City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said the plan sets out “new policies that define standards for Leicester in terms of quality of development, design and environmental ambition.”, He added that agreements with neighbouring districts, had secured around 50% of Leicester’s wider housing need to be delivered outside the city boundaries.
