Happy New Year, Leicester 🎉

As 2026 begins, it’s worth saying out loud what we all know. This city still has a lot going for it, strong communities, proud neighbourhoods, and people who look out for each other.

And as the new year starts, we’ll keep working to make sure the basics are done well:

🧹 Clean streets.
🚦 Safer roads.
🏡 Neighbourhoods that feel looked after.
📌 A council focused on day-to-day priorities.

That’s what Leicester should expect in 2026.

We’ll keep standing with residents, tackling their issues, backing local businesses, and pushing for real change that the city desperately needs.

Leicester families are about to be hit with a 5% council tax rise, again, and Labour Councillors are lowering expectations even further.

We all know the story in Leicester. Bills go up, and the Labour-run council warns of a “squeeze” on public services. They’ve been doing it for years.

They admit spending will outstrip income by ÂŁ15m, and they are relying on reserves to balance the books. The City Mayor even says those reserves could run out in about three years.

So what do residents get for paying more?
➡️ More delays and excuses.
➡️ Housing repairs that drag on while families live with damp and mould.
➡️ Children waiting too long for SEND support while parents get fobbed off.
➡️ Cuts to the simple things that keep neighbourhoods decent, libraries, community centres, adventure playgrounds, the basics.
➡️ A city centre that feels mismanaged, hurting jobs, pay, and footfall.
➡️ And taxpayers still picking up the tab when Labour gets big decisions wrong.

Labour’s answer? More of the same. They point to small bits of help for a limited number of households, while talking about £82.8m of capital spend next year, including £50m on temporary accommodation. And let’s not forget their national promise ahead of the General Election to freeze Council Tax.

Last year we proposed a budget that would have focused on delivery, value for money, and services residents actually notice, but Labour voted it down. We will keep pushing for basic services that work.

Leicester first. Vanity projects last.

Do you feel like you’re paying more and getting less? Time to change how Leicester is run. ✅

ÂŁ10 million!

Labour run City Council has paid £10m of your money to after a “protracted dispute” and they won’t tell us why.

They’re calling it “less than 2.5% of the £405m contract,” like £10m is pocket change, while other services are being cut and streets are still filthy.

We’re demanding answers from Labour’s City Mayor: why did this happen, who’s accountable and where have you pulled this money from to pay Biffa? Why are city’s residents being kept in the dark?

At this weeks Abbey ward meeting, a resident-led motion was presented calling on Leicester City Council to keep the Tudor Centre under direct council control. The motion, submitted by local service users, was supported by Conservative councillor Charleigh Barnes.

We are calling on the City Council to reverse their harmful decision to cut Council Tax Support (CTS), which has left thousands of vulnerable residents across the city facing mounting financial pressure. The cuts, which reduce the support provided to low-income households to help with their Council Tax, are set to lead to a sharp rise in arrears and additional strain on many who are struggling with their cost of living.

All local Conservative councillors stood with the public and voted against the Council Tax Support cuts, fighting to protect those most in need.

Despite our joint efforts, one independent and all Labour councillors voted in favour of the cuts and passed the motion. City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby also supported these cuts, disregarding the concerns of struggling families and individuals in Leicester.

This decision is out of touch with the reality of life for thousands of low income people in Leicester. We will not stand by while people are driven into financial hardship.

We pledge to reinstate CTS if we get majority and control of the council in future elections.

So sad. Really horrible decision by this Labour government and Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for DWP.
