Common Land and the potential for the Feral Food movement

Feral Food Concept: Grow food in public spaces to share with the community for free. Social Impact: Empower people to provide for themselves and take ownership of the land they live on. Historical Context: Enclosures and the Industrial Revolution took away common people’s right to provide for themselves. Private industry and the government

have taken the parental role of providing money, shelter and food in exchange for labour. Without jobs people are supported by the welfare state system but not encouraged to support themselves. The people have been disempowered and infantalised by removing them from their land and their ability to provide for their own basic needs of food and shelter. Feral Food Movement: People take back ownership of public spaces as Common Land. Public land becomes life giving and celebratory. People gain healthier diets and lifestyles as well as an increased sense of belonging to their land.
