How's the end of summer clear out going?! 🤔

Remember - there are plenty of ways to get rid of your unwanted stuff responsibly in for free:

1️⃣ Sell, swap or donate your good quality, reusable stuff to charity
2️⃣ Drop off items at your local household waste recycling centre, open 7 days a week, 8am-6pm
3️⃣ If you're unable to do either of the above, we offer a limited bulky item collection service, visit https://www.leeds.gov.uk/unwanteditems for more info

🚚 If you're thinking of paying someone to take away your waste, avoid the Facebook fly tippers and visit https://www.leedsdirectory.org/LAWCS to find a local, legal, responsible waste carrier 🚚

⚠️ Had a late summer clear out over the bank holiday and you've been quoted a fairy tale price for getting rid of stuff from your home or garden, the reality could be that it gets fly tipped and you get fined ⚠️

The cost for a legal, licensed firm to take away your unwanted items is affected by the size, weight and type of waste 🚚

YES, all the household waste recycling sites are open as usual this bank holiday Monday!

If you've had a clear out and need to dispose of household items, then reusable things can be given a new home! Drop them off at the revive shops at our recycling sites in Kirkstall and Seacroft (you can even have a quick search for a bargain😉) or in the orange re-use containers at each site. If the item is not fit for use, then it can deposited in one of the general waste skips, but please recycle as much as you can💚 . More info here: https://www.leeds.gov.uk/recycling

We’re tackling the sticky problem of chewing gum litter in city centre. Thanks to funding from Keep Britain Tidy we’re blitzing over 4,500 square metres of pavement to give it a deep clean and protective coating that reduces staining and makes future gum removal easier. You’ll also spot new eye-catching signage, encouraging people to do their bit and bin their gum.🗑️💚

⚠️ If you pay someone to take away stuff from your home or garden BEWARE of HIDDEN COSTS ⚠️

Remember - the cheapest waste removal service might not be the best value - if you pay an unlicensed person to remove your rubbish and they fly tip it, YOU could be landed with a £200 fine.

Protect yourself from a fine and save your local area from a potential fly tip. Always do the 3 checks:

✅ Ask to see their waste carrier licence
✅ Get a receipt or waste transfer note
✅ Ask where they are taking the waste to dispose of it

A genuine waste carrier will not mind you asking these questions and will always provide you with a proper receipt. If in doubt, do not allow anyone to take your waste.

👍 Better still, use a LAWCS member. Find an accredited waste carrier here 👇

Social media is a busy marketplace for unlicenced, unregulated waste carriers who undercut responsible ones. Some of these rogue traders inevitably fly tip in , causing damage to the environment, and risking themselves and their customers being fined.

If you pay a waste removal company, use a scrap dealer or hire a skip to dispose of your waste, always do the 3 checks:

✅ Ask to see their waste carrier licence
✅ Get a receipt or waste transfer note
✅ Ask where they are taking the waste to dispose of it

A genuine waste carrier will not mind you asking these questions and will always provide you with a proper receipt. If in doubt, do not allow anyone to take your waste.
