Not long now untill the international exhibition Genghis Khan: How the Mongols Changed the World opens in Leeds ⚔️

For the first time in the UK, see over 250 rare and exciting objects from Mongolia which will tell the story of how the feared Mongol warriors of the Steppe, masters of horse and bow, forged an empire that gave us the first postal system, paper money and a policy of religious tolerance.

2 kings, 12,000 guests, 66,000 litres of beer.

506 years ago today, the Field of Cloth of Gold (aka one of history's most lavish and expensive peace parties) was just beginning.

The meeting between King Henry VIII and King Francis I was the result of six difficult years of diplomacy, and was orchestrated to cement and celebrate the new-found peace between England and France.

What ensued was 18 days of diplomacy, jousting, feasting, and all-round abundance. With the royal frenemies determined to outshine the other, no expensive was spared - and not even a last-minute outfit change could prevent Henry from looking his best.

Pictured here is the armour Henry VIII wore during the foot combat tournaments. Intricately decorated with Tudor roses, saints and foliage, arranged in a chequered pattern. The king would have appeared spectacular when fighting at the barriers.

The Normandy Landings on June 6th 1944 marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War.

For many servicemen, the monument of Fort Nelson, our sister site in Portsmouth, was the very last thing they could see on British soil as they set out on what remains, to this day, the largest seaborne invasion ever seen.

As we mark the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, the Royal Armouries pays tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom.
