Today I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Vale View Day Centre in Lancaster, one of our regular RISE services. ❤️

Every time we visit Vale View, we have 20+ people eager to get involved in our seated sports sessions. They’re always full of enthusiasm, laughter, competitiveness, a little bit of cheating… and, of course, the occasional disagreement with the referee! 😂

But today was extra special.

Being a hockey player myself, I’ll always sneak a bit of hockey into our sessions whenever I can. Today, I had the privilege of playing hockey with Joan.

What made it so special?

Joan is 104 years old. 💛🏑

And if ever there was someone who proved that age shouldn’t stop you from getting involved, it’s Joan.

Her mobility might not be what it once was, but give this lady a hockey stick and suddenly she was playing like there was an Olympic gold medal on the line! 🥇

She competed. She laughed. She may have bent the rules slightly. She definitely shouted at the referee a few times… and she even earned herself a 30-second sending off! 😂

But most importantly, she had the best time.

At the end of the session, I asked Joan if she’d let me have a photograph with her. After all, it’s not every day I get the opportunity to play hockey with someone who is 104 years young.

Joan jumped at the chance. Her only concern?

“What does my hair look like?” 😂❤️

Thankfully, she decided it was photo-worthy and even managed to throw us a smile.

This is exactly why we do what we do at RISE. Sport, movement, laughter and a little healthy competition really can be for everyone, whatever their age or ability.

So everyone…

Today we enjoyed a silk painting session with Sue 😊 Thank you so much for taking time out of your day Sue to support our clients to do something different!
The end products are absolutely amazing and full of colour!

Yesterday, we were visited by St John's Hospice. They talked about the services they provide and touched upon the very important subject of end of life care in a positive way.
Afterwards, Gerry, Colin, Alan, Pam and Mavis enjoyed a competitive game of darts to finish a good day off nicely 😊
