As summer is now here and temperatures are rising, I want to talk about one particular challenge that we saw often last year: people entering the gorge.

Last year we saw many visitors to the Falls of Clyde climbing down into the gorge, often bypassing fences and barriers. We’ve already seen a significant number of people swimming in the gorge again this year. I also came across people lighting barbecues on the riverbank, swimming in Corra Linn’s basin and sunbathing on the middle step of Corra Linn.

If you’ve visited the site before, you may have noticed the signs warning against entering the gorge. These are there for your safety. Even when the water is low and it looks calm, it is not safe.

Bonnington Weir at the top of the reserve diverts a significant amount of water from the river. When it is opened, large volumes of water can be released, causing the river level to rise quickly. There is no warning system in place, and anyone in the gorge can easily be cut off and trapped.

If you are visiting the reserve this summer, please respect the signage and do not enter the gorge. It’s there for your safety.

🌿 Volunteer Week – Thank You 🌿
As Volunteer Week comes to a close, I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who gives their time to support the Falls of Clyde.
Whether it’s practical conservation work, wildlife surveys, helping at events, or inspiring the next generation through education—our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.
Quite simply, we couldn’t do it without you.
It’s a privilege to work alongside such a passionate, skilled and dedicated community of people who care deeply about this special place.
💚 Thank you for making a difference.

🌳🦡🐝Volunteer Week-Survey Volunteers 🐝🦡🌳

Our survey volunteers play a vital role in helping us understand and protect the wildlife at Falls of Clyde.
From bees, butterflies and Riverfly monitoring to badger surveys, this amazing group of volunteers collect the data that underpins everything we do.
This year alone, we’ve surveyed over 50 badger setts across the our reserves—an incredible achievement and a testament to the dedication of the team.
We’re always looking for more people to get involved, especially with our weekly butterfly and bee surveys over the summer. Or our Badger surveys in the winter.
If you’d like to take part and help contribute to real conservation work, we’d love to hear from you—just drop me an email.

🦋 Volunteer Week – Moth Survey Team 🦋
Did you know we have a dedicated group of volunteers who meet every month to study moths at the Falls of Clyde?
Led by expert Jo Davies, our moth survey group helps us unlock a fascinating hidden world—from colourful species like Elephant Hawk-moths to tiny micro-moths often overlooked.
These surveys are about much more than identification—they help us build a detailed picture of biodiversity on the reserve. The data collected contributes to wider Scottish Wildlife Trust and national monitoring, helping track changes in species over time and informing conservation work.
A huge thank you to Jo for sharing his expertise and supporting both staff and volunteers, and to everyone who joins us to record these incredible species.

Poor little blackbird found today tangled in fishing line and hanging from a tree. 💔
Thanks to our amazing staff and volunteers, it was safely rescued and freed.

This is a reminder of just how dangerous discarded fishing line can be. It can cause serious injury or even death to wildlife.

Please always take your fishing line home and dispose of it properly. Small actions make a huge difference for the animals we share our world with. 💚

We were lucky there was no injury. If you ever find an injured or distressed wild animal, contact the Scottish SPCA on 03000 999 999 for advice and assistance. They can guide you on what to do and when a rescue team is needed. Or contact Hesslehead Wildlife Rescue
