As summer is now here and temperatures are rising, I want to talk about one particular challenge that we saw often last year: people entering the gorge.
Last year we saw many visitors to the Falls of Clyde climbing down into the gorge, often bypassing fences and barriers. We’ve already seen a significant number of people swimming in the gorge again this year. I also came across people lighting barbecues on the riverbank, swimming in Corra Linn’s basin and sunbathing on the middle step of Corra Linn.
If you’ve visited the site before, you may have noticed the signs warning against entering the gorge. These are there for your safety. Even when the water is low and it looks calm, it is not safe.
Bonnington Weir at the top of the reserve diverts a significant amount of water from the river. When it is opened, large volumes of water can be released, causing the river level to rise quickly. There is no warning system in place, and anyone in the gorge can easily be cut off and trapped.
If you are visiting the reserve this summer, please respect the signage and do not enter the gorge. It’s there for your safety.
