The Friends of Jacob Smith Park

The Friends of Jacob Smith Park The Friends of Jacob Smith Park is a voluntary group, dedicated to the protection, conservation and enhancement of this stunning historic parkland. HG5 9EJ.

We are volunteers committed to working with local authorities and the community, to nurture and enhance Jacob Smith Park's natural beauty and wildlife for all ages to enjoy and future generations to cherish. The 30 acres of private walled parkland were bequeathed to Harrogate Borough Council to manage for the people of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, by Winifred Jacob Smith. She was the last surv

iving member of a prominent local farming family. A gift to the community...

We are incredibly lucky that Winifred chose to make such a gift to the local community. Not only is it a magical place for our senses to soak up, it is an important habitat for wildlife, wonderful recreational space and historical site and educational resource. The latter of which is supported by a fantastic nature trail designed by local ecologist Bernadette Lobo and artist Carline Miekina. It is free to download as PDFs at www.jacobsmithpark.co.uk/things-to-do

Get involved...

Winifred Jacob Smith gave us all the freedom of the park and we must never take it for granted. Our mission is to encourage everyone to value the park and care for it whilst sharing it with respect for nature, and one another so it can be enjoyed by all members of the community. Contact details:

**UPDATE ON REPLACEMENT LOG SEATING**

Thanks to HBC Countryside Education Officer Shirelle and our Treasurer Richard for visiting Grantley Saw Mill recently to try to source four new log seats.

These will replace three existing seats which have rotted and the fourth, which rotted a while ago and no longer exists, and is greatly missed, at the top of the sledging hill.

At the time of Shirelle and Richard's visit, the Friends of Hell Wath were arranging the collection of their log seats. However, the Hell Wath ones are shallower than ours and after discussions with members of the park community, who use the seats regularly, the decision has been taken to wait until appropriate logs arrive at the saw mill. We have asked that we are notified when new logs arrive that fit our requirements.

We will keep you all posted on any progress!

The photograph shows volunteers helping to position one of the most recent log seats. Jo

***URGENT MESSAGE -CANCELLATION OF TOMORROW'S BALSAM BASH****

Dear all,

Sadly, I am going to have to cancel tomorrow's balsam bash because we are having to isolate.

A Friend is going to go to the entrance of the park at 10 am in the morning and stay for 10 minutes or so, just in case people turn up and wonder what is going on. There will also be a message on the noticeboard but if you know anyone who was thinking of coming, please just spread the word for me anyway.

Hopefully, I will be in a position to hold this Wednesday evening's bash between 6pm-8pm. Fingers crossed!

Take care and stay cool,

Jo x

**First volunteer Himalayan Balsam Bash of 2021**

Hello everyone,

Hope you can join us for this event to hand pull Himalayan Balsam - please note that social distancing rules will apply. I aim to run two weekday evening sessions as well. At this session we will concentrate inside the pond area. I am going to make an event up on the page - so you can register your interest to attend.

Our new HBC Countryside Ranger, Shirelle, has also started strimming large areas of balsam for us, and intends to do this every year.

All the best, Jo
