♻Call to help reduce county’s waste by recycling items correctly ♻

Residents in North Yorkshire are being encouraged to build on their strong recycling record by checking that all recyclable items are being placed in the correct container.

Householders across the county already recycle more than 42 per cent of their waste, helping to save valuable resources and reduce the amount sent for disposal.

As part of Recycle Week 2026, which runs from today (September 14) to September 20, North Yorkshire Council is highlighting how a few simple changes at home could help even more recyclable materials stay in circulation, as some everyday items that could be recycled are still ending up in rubbish bins.

Residents can recycle the following items at the kerbside, regardless of where they live in the county or which recycling container they use:
• Paper, cardboard and magazines.
• Envelopes including windowed envelopes.
• Greeting cards and wrapping paper - those with glitter or foil on them cannot be recycled.
• Shredded paper contained in used boxes, for example cereal box/shoe box.
• Food and drink cartons.
• Metal food and drink cans.
• Empty metal aerosol cans.
• Aluminium foil and aluminium food trays.
• Plastic bottles - including trigger sprays.
• Plastic pots, tubs and trays - including yogurt pots, margarine tubs, ready meal trays, plastic punnets.
• Glass jars and bottles including perfume bottles.
• Plastic tubes, such as toothpaste tubes.
• Aluminium tubes, such as tomato puree tubes.
• Plastic plant pots, no soil and not black.

North Yorkshire Council’s leader, Cllr Carl Les said: “Residents across North Yorkshire already do a fantastic job recycling, but there is always more we can do.
“By putting the right items in the right bin, we can all play a part in reducing the amount of waste being thrown away and help to protect the environment.”

Please see the link below from North Yorkshire Community Messaging's - latest alert regarding Anti Social Behaviour and safety concerns linked to Surron style bikes within the Knaresborough Area.

The link gives clear guidance about the illegal use of these bikes, and instructions for how to report if you see anyone who is using an E bike illegally - being ridden on roads, parks, footpaths, bridleways, cycle paths and other public spaces.

Please contact the police on 101 or give information on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111:

• Date and time
• Location
• Description of the bike
• Description of the rider(s)
• Direction of travel
• Any registration number displayed
• Any photographs or video footage obtained safely

999 - If the incident is occurring at the time of the call and there is an immediate risk to public safety or a crime is in progress.

Information provided by the public helps North Yorkshire Police build intelligence, identify offenders and take positive action where appropriate.

FEVA ON LOCATION – THAT’S A WRAP! 🎬🤩

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the FEVA On Location Media & Film Walking Tours of Knaresborough.

We weren’t quite sure what to expect when we put these walks together, but the response was fantastic. Thanks to everyone who came along, asked questions, shared stories and most importantly, took the time to give us such lovely and encouraging comments afterwards.

We really enjoyed putting the walks together and looking at Knaresborough through a slightly different lens.

Yes, there was plenty about film and television — from ‘Escape to the Country’ and ‘Countryfile’ to Christmas films and other productions that have used the town as a backdrop.

But the more we looked into it, the more obvious it became that the real story wasn’t just about where the cameras have been.

It was about why people keep coming here to tell stories in the first place.

The castle, the gorge, the viaduct, the old streets and the river have attracted filmmakers, artists and writers — but they’ve also attracted pilgrims, travellers, traders, eccentrics, adventurers and some extraordinary local characters for centuries.

And that gave us the chance to tell some of the stories behind the places we all pass every day.

So, if you came on one of the FEVA walks — thank you. It was great to see so many people turning up and the feedback has been really encouraging. It’s made all the research, preparation and occasional head-scratching worthwhile!

And if you missed the Media & Film Tour, don’t worry — there’s always next time!

Mayor Cllr Shan Oakes and her Consort Bill Rigby thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Goole for this year’s Yorkshire Day Civic Celebrations. It was a warm and welcoming event, bringing together communities from across the county to celebrate Yorkshire’s heritage, pride and shared identity.

A heartfelt thank you to Goole Town Council, The Mayor of Goole Cllr Flynn and all involved for hosting such a memorable day - a wonderful occasion that showcased the very best of Yorkshire spirit.

We have received notification that Network Rail will be carrying out Track Maintenance work from Harrogate to Poppleton on the following dates:

📅From 22:00 Monday 31st August until 06:30 Tuesday 1st September 2026

📅From 22:00 Monday 7th September until 06:30 Tuesday 8 September 2026

The work will involve using handheld, mechanical tools and lighting for the safety of the workers. Network Rail apologise for any disturbance caused by the maintenance work.
