Kirrie Connections

Kirrie Connections Scotland's first dementia Meeting Centre. Community support for people living with dementia.

Kirrie Connections is a community hub that serves as the base for the Dementia Friendly Kirriemuir Project. The hub is a place where people living with dementia and their carers can get advice, support and form new friendships. We are currently looking for volunteers to help support our activities, and are also looking for people living with dementia and their carers to be directly involved in telling us what they want from the project

As we come to the end of , I just want to highlight some of the testimony we have gathered from some of our carers which demonstrates the power of carers peer support.

Kirrie Connections has been an invaluable part of my journey as a carer, both in attending the centre with my mother and the ongoing support I receive from the carers group. KW

Kirrie Connections has provided me with a place of trust where I can share my problems with others without judgement, where people (carers and staff) listen and try their best to provide comfort and advice. David

Kirrie Connections has been a Godsend, an absolute lifeline! - for both my husband and me. The carers' peer support group has connected me with people who truly understand the challenges and emotions of caring for someone with dementia, and reminds me I am not alone.
Their presence, insight, friendship and support is invaluable and means more I can say. Annie

For several years, support from the dedicated and enthusiastic staff from Kirrie Connections was my lifeline as a Carer, along with the weekly visits to the ‘sharing and caring’ Carers Group - Ann

Georges story

Kirrie Connections has been and is a still saviour for me as a paid carer for my wife, who has mixed dementia.

I arrived at Kirrie Connections some year’s ago, when I was at a crisis point.
I found I was able to talk to staff about everything that was going on and they understood what I was going through and started to help me.

I then joined the carers support group and found out I was not alone, others had gone through or were going through the same things I was going through, it was great not to feel alone and be able to talk freely and openly to others about me and what was happening, in a non judgemental group of strangers, who offered kindness, understanding and a shoulder to cry on.

I now, after some years, call those once strangers my close friend's and we continue to support each other through the good, the bad and difficult times as fellow carers, so without Kirrie Connections I would not have met those new friends and fellow carers, gained the valuable service and support from the centre, be in the place I currently am mentally and physically as everyone has helped me navigate the challenging rollercoaster of a journey I’m on looking after someone with dementia!

My thanks goes out to everyone for the continued support I gain each and every day.

If your reading this and looking after someone with dementia and you possibly not made contact with Kirrie Connections, or any of the other meeting centres in Angus yet, I would genuinely recommend you make contact with your local centre as they can offer you some great support, you’ll also find there are many other people just like you who have benefited from coming along and having the first chat!

Remember as a carer, you need to care for yourself too! George

Thank you to all of our carers, Kirrie Connections are proud to walk alongside you all 🥰

Our Kirrie Connections Carers Group are an exceptional bunch and despite all of the challenges they face, they are there for each other through the tough times. They support each other with their knowledge, their lived experience and they can empathise in a way that no-one else can. Days out can be precious and time out from a caring role is therapeutic as demonstrated by the smiles in these photos 🥰

This week will be dedicated to the army of unpaid carers who support our members throughout their journey. They are resilient beyond belief and are the advocate, the P.A. the cook, the cleaner, the nurse and the hundred other roles they perform on a daily basis. They are also husbands, wives, partners, sons, daughters and loved ones. Our carers peer support group meets every Monday morning from 10.00am and their wisdom, their sharing of their lived experience and their empathy for each other is a privilege to witness. Thank you to all of you, we salute you

Well that's the first week of June over already. We have been painting bottle tops for our art project, making thank you cards for those who help us & as always we have played lots of games. We had a lovely visit from the Northmuir Primary School Nursery who laughed & sang the whole time & we ended the week with singing & dancing along to the music with John Young 😊

Friday of it is then !!! Our Friday volunteers to be celebrated today and first up we have Caroline, an absolute joy to be around, full of fun and always with a big smile, Caroline brings positivity to every room she is in and we love having her around 😁
Next up is Fiona, Fiona is relatively new to us but it feels like she has been here forever, Fiona is a natural leader and takes on every task with ease having found her feet from Day 1, nothing is too much trouble for her and she has an aura of calm and serenity 😇 Not forgetting our lovely Mandy who has taken a step back for a bit due to the demands of her caring role but has wore many hats for KC over the years and her and Ann are the absolute legends when it comes to Christmas decorations 😉

This week has been dedicated to all of our and not forgetting those of you who have given something of yourselves to help KC including all of our members and their families over the last 10 years, thank you 🥰

Thursday in bring us the wonderful Scott, Shona, Garry and Karen. Scott brings the laughter and the joy, always up for a laugh but with a genuine understanding of our members and his storytelling (and dressing up) is always entertaining 😆 Scott is warm and genuine and our members are always the happier for seeing him. Shona is the workhorse, running the kitchen like a true pro and helping out with anything that needs doing and has multiple volunteer roles across the town - don't know where she gets her energy from, what a woman she is 😉Garry has been quite poorly for a bit and has had to take a step back recently and we have missed having him around. Garry is quiet, unassuming and has a special way of engaging with the members in a really meaningful way and we hope he gets back to us when he is fully recovered, get well soon Garry 😘 Our newest Thursday recruit is Karen who is a carer for her husband who has dementia. Karen has eased into her role and her lived experience lends itself so well that it feels like she has always been a part of the team 🥰

Spotlight is on our Wednesday volunteers today, Pam, Pat, Jim and Alistair. Pam has also been with us since our days in Bank Street and has the official title of our longest serving volunteer 👏 Pam is kind, compassionate, caring and has a quiet way about her that brings calm to every situation. She is abundantly talented and patient and we are very luck to have her. Pat, a former carer for her late husband was keen to give back to Kirrie Connections after the support she had throughout her caring role and although Pat has retired from her volunteering role this week, we wanted to mark her time with us, thank you Pat for your patience, kindness and support and we will miss you 🥰 Jim our resident in house baker brings us not only his baking prowess but his ability to get involved in absolutely everything we do and he keeps order at the Domino sessions, no mean feat I assure you 🤣 Alistair is one of our newest recruits after getting involved with the new workshop projects. Alistair has brought with him his skills and expertise and has embraced his new role with us. In his own words, Alistair says

'Recently retired ,having run my own business I now have more time to myself so when I read that volunteers were required at Kirrie Connections I thought this was an opportunity to give something back to the community who have supported me throughout my working life.
I visited the Centre just to get an insight into what everybody gets up to and decided to apply, I was accepted and now help out in the workshop on a weekly basis.
I was in the building trade and really enjoy DIY so I have been looking out for suitable small woodworking projects for the morning sessions. Some of those who attend had suggested that they would like to make bird feeders and squirrel boxes.
For me preparation is key to any project so I sourced materials, cut out templates in my own workshop and took them to the hub so that on the day it was just a case of assembling the pieces to create a finished item. Whilst working alongside those with dementia I’ve been only to aware that some are no longer as able as they used to be but with a little help and patience on my part they all manage and seem to enjoy doing what we are doing.
One gentleman was telling us all that he has red squirrels where he lives so he left last week with a box we’d made and we are ever hopeful that with the addition of some nuts we will soon see some photos of his garden visitors feasting from our very own workmanship!
For anyone wondering if volunteering is for them “ just give it a try”.
In the relatively short time I’ve been volunteering I’d have to say that you most certainly take more from it than you put in. To see folks be happy, smiling and being given a chance to create something of their own has given me lots of pleasure.'

You are all amazing, thank you 😍

This we pay tribute to our army of amazing volunteers and Tuesdays are in the very capable hands of Linda, Lola, Pat, Alison, Lynn and Alan. Linda a retired nurse is our angel in disguise, always on hand to ensure everything is in order from organising the kitchen, tempting us with her recipes and helping the members to enjoy the activities and when she isn't enjoying her caravan helps us out 2 days a week. Lola is Linda's granddaughter and is our youngest volunteer at just 18 years old, Lola loves to pamper the ladies and is often seen doing some nail care and helping out where needed. Pat is one of our long serving volunteers having been with us since our days in Bank Street and despite her own physical disabilities is always on hand to provide her expertise in the crafting sessions and always wears a smile. Alison who has a full time job but who makes time in her busy schedule to come and spend time with the members and nothing is too much trouble for her. Lynn is another retired nurse and our other angel, her smile is almost as big as her heart and she is kind, considerate and compassionate with everyone. Alan is the workshop volunteer and has been an absolute godsend these past few months and has written a little something about his new role.
'Following my retirement, I wanted to find a role where I could help others. I saw a Facebook post asking for volunteers in Kirrie Connections new workshop and felt this would be a suitable volunteering role for myself. It’s been fantastic!
I really enjoy creating and building things and to spend time helping others to do this has been rewarding.
I would recommend to anyone with time on their hands to give volunteering a go.
Just do it! Its great fun and very rewarding.'

Thank you each and every one of you, and not just for this week when we highlight the work you do but every week and for every hour you kindly give to us all 🥰

It's that time of year again when we make a fuss of our amazing volunteer team. Each day this week will be dedicated to the 18 volunteers that bring that extra something to Kirrie Connections and who really are something special. We start off the week by highlighting the work of our Board, Derek Marshall - Chair, Anne Mollison - Treasurer and Trustees - Robert Hamilton and Evelyn Bennet. Our Board provide strategic leadership, governance and support, bringing with them a mix of professional and lived experience and have guided the leadership team through an exceptional year with our ambitious Capital Project.
