❄️ It's that time of year again - we'll be testing the festive lighting anchor bolts across Kirkwall, Stromness and St Margaret's Hope from Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September, with short road closures in place as work moves along.

• Kirkwall - Bridge Street, Albert Street, Broad Street, Victoria Street and Main Street will see disruption on Monday and Tuesday.

• St Margaret's Hope - Cromarty Square will see disruption on Wednesday.

• Stromness - Victoria Street and Dundas Street will see disruption on Thursday.

Closures will be brief and will move along as we progress, so disruption in any one spot shouldn't last long - thank you for your patience.

Another Great Year for Orkney's Young Cyclists!

A total of 185 Primary 6 pupils across Orkney who have achieved their Bikeability Level 2 award this year!

From Dounby to Westray, Papdale to Rousay, schools across the county have been out on two wheels building the skills, confidence and road sense to cycle safely.

Here's a short video of Catherine Johnson and Kirsty Spence, Active School Coordinators from Orkney Islands Council's Sport and Leisure team talking a bit about bikeability.

🇳🇴 Today, the Norwegian flag is flying at half-mast above Kirkwall Town Hall, and the bells of St Magnus Cathedral will be rung, as a mark of respect for the late King Harald V, who died on 28 August 2026. King Harald reigned for 35 years and is succeeded by his son, HM King Haakon VIII.

The state funeral takes place at Oslo Cathedral later today, followed by a procession to Akershus Fortress for private interment in the Royal Mausoleum.

🎬 FREE SCREENING: The Low Road

On World Su***de Prevention Day, the Orkney Su***de Prevention Taskforce is pleased to support a special screening of the acclaimed Scottish film The Low Road at the Pickaquoy Centre, Kirkwall.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A and panel discussion with the film's director, Stephen Mulhearn, providing an opportunity to reflect on the themes raised and discuss the importance of su***de prevention and mental health support.

This powerful film has been shown across Scotland to help open conversations about mental health, self-harm and su***de, reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek support when they need it.
