Hello Everyone
This post is to let you know that the Temple is now complete and has managed to be short listed into the final of Shed of the Year 2018. It is one of 24 sheds and the only one from Northumberland. If you would like to vote for the Temple please go to www.readersheads.co.uk
The Temple is in the history section and the competition is tough.

Shield No. -- 7 This shield is red with 3 boars head and belongs to a neighbouring family who got on well with the Loraines of Kirkharle in the15th Century. How ever it would appear there Wes a fall out over some land that the Loraines squirrel which this family believed was there land. As a consequence the 2 families took the matter to the county Sherif who found in favour of the Lorraines. This family live in a hall to the south of Kirkharle and still own the estate today. Do you have any ideas who they are -- there's a clue in the shield -- think of another name for a boar - SWINE -- the shield is the ancient coat of arms of the Swinburn Family of Capheaton Hall.
More tomorrow -- McTavish

Shield No. 6 -- The Trevelyans of Wallington -- Northumberland. This is an interesting shield as it shows a rearing white horse in the sea and fRon a heraldic point of view is quite unusual. The Trevelyan Family acquired the Wallington Hall añd estate from the Blacketts in the late 18th Century and Wallington together with Netherwitton have been there family home since then. The Trevelyans were good neighbours with the Loraines and there is a tenuous family link. The Trevelyans like the Loraines, Blackettes, del Strothers, Fenwick, Wallingtons and Middletons were prominent families in Northumberland and all took there turn to carry out the Kings orders and execute his warrants, collect dues, when they took on the task of being the High Sherif of Northumberland.

Shield No.5 - The Blackett Family. The Loraine of Kirkharle became associated with the Blacketts when they acquired the huge estate at Wallington from the Wallington Family (Shield - 4) in the 14th Century. The Blacketts are among the most important families in Northumberland and held as an important position as the Duke of Northumberland, the Ridley - Whites of Blagdon, Middletons of Belsay and the Umfravilles of Prudhoe. The Blacketts owned a substantial amount of land in Northumbria and other countries of England. The shield is interesting as it shows 3 scallops shells which indicates this early Knight was a Christian pilgrim and may have travelled to the holy land on a Crusade. The Blacketts got on well with the Loraines and support each other's family and kin.
