Broughton House & Garden NTS

Broughton House & Garden NTS Home of painter E.A. Hornel (a 'Glasgow Boy') from 1901 until 1933, and his sister Tizzy until her death in 1950. An extensive garden with all year interest.

The house holds Hornel's pictures, vast collection of artefacts and furniture. Library. Archive. Right in the heart of Kirkcudbright, a pretty artists’ colony on the Solway Firth, this 18th-century Georgian house is the former home of Scottish painter E A Hornel, one of the Glasgow Boys. Painstakingly preserved and recreated, it’s a living museum of Hornel’s life and work, packed to the rafters with his paintings and those of his contemporaries, as well as his vast library, which includes one of the world’s biggest collections of works by Robert Burns. Nestled behind the house, backing on to the River Dee, is Hornel’s beautiful garden. Greatly influenced by his love of Japan, it’s a curious and colourful mixture of Eastern and Western horticulture and sculpture that is a delight to explore.

FORTHCOMING - CONVERSATIONS WITH HORNEL
Opens 5th September

We are very excited to welcome Kate Bentley RI RSW RGI SWA with a featured artist exhibition in the Autumn. Kate will be delivering over thirty new paintings for this exhibition, inspired by time spent exploring EA Hornel's collections, home and gardens at Broughton House & Garden NTS

Rather than a tribute, this exhibition is a conversation across time, with paintings that respond to Hornel’s art, photographs and Japanese artefacts through Bentley’s distinctive process of layering, transformation, colour, pattern and the human figure. The gardens and extraordinary quality of light that have long inspired artists in Kirkcudbright also play an important role in the exhibition, creating works that evoke both the physical and emotional presence of place.

Through this richly layered series of paintings, Bentley invites viewers to make their own connections between past and present, revealing an artistic dialogue that is both deeply personal and rooted in Kirkcudbright’s remarkable cultural heritage.

We are delighted to also welcome supporting artists: Andy Cross, Carol Dewart PAI RSW RGI, Ian McWhinnie, Jackie Stevenson RSW and Mishi Bellamy.

New collections will be exhibited, including new glass by Amanda Simmons and more...

Kate will be giving a talk at Broughton House on Friday 4th September, from 6.30pm. Please book a seat by emailing them at [email protected] £8 entry.
