What stories could 400 years of history tell?
Completed by the late 16th century, the Long Gallery became a library in the 1740s when Cuthbert Constable installed large bookcases to house his growing collection. By the 18th century, the room was a place of study and experiment, filled with books, scientific instruments and a passion for learning.
Later, it became a space for gatherings, music and entertainment, while 19th-century plasterwork, textiles and furnishings helped create the character visitors see today.
When you visit the Long Gallery, look out for its many historic chairs – including one said to have been used by Queen Victoria during her visit to Hull.
