Hull Live is supporting a major UK water safety campaign this summer. The recent Bank Holiday weekend has seen hot and sunny weather across our area and throughout the UK. It has been beautiful outside but sadly, hot weather often coincides with tragedy as people swim outdoors, not always with a full understanding of the risks.

In Lincoln, a heartbroken father has paid tribute to his 15-year-old son who tragically died after swimming in Swanholme Lakes on Sunday. And tributes are also being paid to a 13-year-old boy who died following an incident at Leadbeater Dam, in Calderdale, near Halifax.

The timing is therefore significant for triple Olympic gold medallist Tom Dean, Tom Dean Swim School and Leisure Focus to launch an expanded water safety and drowning prevention campaign across multiple areas of the UK this spring and summer.

The campaign will deliver important water safety education and messaging to schools, colleges, leisure centres and local communities, with key areas of focus initially being Hull, York, Birtley, Warrington, Windsor and Maidenhead, with more areas to join in 2026.

The campaign aims to educate young people on the dangers of open water, rivers, lakes and canals ahead of the summer period. Nationally, around 400 people lose their lives to drowning every year with the majority of these tragedies happening during the warmer months.

Last night, members of the team were honoured to attend the East Riding of Yorkshire Chairman’s Awards in Beverley, where we were presented with the Chairman’s Commendation Award. The award was given to the team, alongside other emergency services, in recognition of the incident at Withernsea earlier this year.

This commendation reflects the dedication, professionalism, and teamwork shown by everyone involved in responding to that incident. While the outcome of the job remains something we reflect on deeply, the recognition from the community means a great deal and stands as a testament to the commitment shown by all those who work to protect life along our coastline.

Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Sarah and Grace Keeling, and Mark Ratcliffe, and continue to be with them as they navigate the lasting impact of that day.

We were humbled to stand alongside so many other blue light emergency services and lifeboat crews, whose ongoing dedication, courage, and service to our communities deserves equal recognition and respect.

This award belongs to every member of the team and to all those who continue to answer the call, day and night.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support.

HM Coastguard responds to every Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and Emergency Position Indication Radio Beacon (EPIRB) alert, including false alarms caused by incorrect disposal.

While these beacons have saved many lives, false alerts have led to unnecessary searches in places such as recycling centres, and calls going unanswered when beacon registration details haven’t been updated.

Chris Hopkins, Satellite Communications and UK Mission Control Centre Manager, said: “Our teams can’t stand down until they can be confident no one is at risk, so we encourage everyone to follow the three Rs when disposing of their beacon.”

Remove the batteries: Doing so stops the beacon from transmitting an alert. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions 🔋

Recycle responsibly: Once powered down, dispose of the beacon and batteries correctly, which usually means taking them to a recycling centre ♻️

Registry: Keep your beacon registration details up to date. If a beacon has been disposed of, delete the record from your online Beacon Account at
https://f.mtr.cool/wfwacbpzli 📝

Please note that it is a legal requirement for all PLBs and EPIRBs carried on board UK flagged vessels to be registered and kept up to date.

Yellow wind warnings have been issued by the Met Office for Scotland, Northern Ireland, parts of northern England, and north Wales on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 April.

Visiting the coast during strong winds can be dangerous, so it’s best to stay at home until conditions improve.

However, if you do find yourself at the coast, be mindful to:

• Check the latest weather forecast before heading out

• Stay well back from cliff edges, as strong gusts can suddenly push you off balance

• Avoid walking near the base of cliffs, which can crumble, and watch out for flying debris

• Carry a means of calling for help, such as a fully charged mobile phone

• Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Huge thanks to the Rapid Relief Team (https://rrtglobal.org/gb/) for providing us with food packs and blankets.
These will be carried in our new Operational Support Vehicle and be invaluable on protracted incidents.

Please do check out their website; they support communities across the board, including families, the homeless, emergency services and emergency and disaster relief, to name just a few.
