Our firefighters from Calvert Lane Fire Station and Prevention Team have been out in the community promoting water safety.

Firefighters have been checking our water safety signage includes What3Words locations, helping emergency services quickly pinpoint incidents.

Meanwhile, Prevention Advisors visited Kingswood House to speak with young people about the risks of unsafe behaviour around water. Using our river simulator, they highlighted just how unpredictable open water can be and how understanding the risks could save your life.

Would you know what to do if you got into difficulty in the water?

No matter how you end up in the water, knowing how to float could save your life.

Float to Live:

🔹 Tilt your head back (keep your ears submerged)
🔹 Relax and breathe normally
🔹 Spread your arms and legs to stay afloat
🔹 Once calm, shout for help or swim to safety

Stay Water Safe:

✔️ Follow safety and warning signs
✔️ Tell someone where you’re going if heading out alone
✔️ Watch out for slips and trips near water
✔️ Keep away from unstable riverbanks and cliff edges

If someone falls into deep water:

📞 Call 999 immediately
📍 Use What3Words to share your exact location
🌊 Never enter the water to try and rescue them

Let’s keep our community safe.

With the recent warm weather and the last weekend of half term seeing more people heading out on boating trips, camping, or caravanning, it’s important to remember the hidden dangers – carbon monoxide (CO).

⚠️ CO is a deadly gas you can’t see, smell or taste
Whether you’re on a boat, in a caravan, motorhome, or tent, simple actions can save lives.

🚫 Never:
• Use a BBQ inside a tent, boat cabin, caravan, or awning – even if it’s raining
• Use generators or heaters indoors unless they are designed for indoor use

✅ Always:
• Fit a working carbon monoxide alarm
• Test it before your trip
• Make sure fuel-burning appliances are well maintained

🩺 Know the symptoms of CO poisoning:
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Feeling sick or tired

👉 If symptoms appear, get into fresh air immediately and seek medical help.

Enjoy your time outdoors – stay safe wherever you are

On Saturday morning, our firefighters from Peaks Lane Fire Station had the pleasure of attending the opening of Centre 4 in Nunsthorpe. A fantastic new facility offering a wide range of activities for young people.

The crew were given a guided tour by the youth team, where they explored the sensory room, computer suites, breakout spaces, music room and the large indoor and outdoor games areas 🎮🎶🏀

It’s great to see such an exciting space created for the community 🙌
