The American Heartworm Society estimates that over 1 million dogs in the US have heartworm disease, and confirms it is spread by mosquitoes. In Europe, ESCCAP notes that vector-borne diseases in dogs and cats can have long incubation periods, unpredictable transmission and serious health consequences.
In the UK, mosquitoes are not currently considered a major pet disease vector, but travel, warmer weather and changing ecology make awareness worth keeping.
