On the Oxford Greenbelt Way and National Cycle Route 51. St Mary's Fields is a 14 acre nature reserve behind St Mary's church. It is owned by Kidlington Parish Council and managed by volunteers.

Great turn-out on a beautiful early autumn morning for the first volunteer session since June (apart from the Big Hay Rake in late July). Lots of jobs tackled: path clearing, hay raking, pond clearing, cutting down dead ash trees, drilling more bee holes, litter picking, wildflower planting, and - of course - chatting over tea, cake and biscuits.

Weather dependent .... if the weather is poor you 'll be notified by email that its cancelled or postponed.

During the year we'll try to cover north, south, east and west Kidlington, and also some "central" sites. The Rendezvous will be announced by email.

Please bring a torch and good footwear - we 'll be going over rough ground at times.

The new bee hotel already has 6 rooms occupied by what appear to be leafcutter bees. There is an egg with a supply of pollen and nectar in each cell for the larva to eat when it hatches. There are multiple cells in each hole, the number depends on the depth of the hole.

Excellent turn-out for the annual hay rake this morning, on a lovely July morning. A month earlier than usual, partly to try and get more nutrients out of the soil, to encourage wildflower growth.
Thank you to everyone who came today, the regular reserve volunteers, those who came for the first time, and of course, as always, the big team from the Oxford Conservation Volunteers, without whom the task could not have been completed in less than three hours.
