Why not celebrate by joining us in maintaining the beautiful woodland?

Tomorrow is the first task day of the year. We have some fallen trees to clear so we recommend strong gloves.

Don’t forget tomorrow is the last task event of the year, and with clocks going back you get an extra hour in bed before we meet at 9:30, at our usual meeting place by the Western most gate to Middle Tyning, from Manor Road (see the purple circle).

We have plenty to do and welcome any new volunteers.

We have a lot of bulbs to plant this Sunday, and could really do with some extra help to plant them!

Now is the perfect chance to join us for the first time & get to see the fruits of your labour in Spring.

We meet at 9:30 at the west most gate of Middle Tyning (the South part of the woods), from Manor Road (purple circle on the map). We work until roughly lunchtime (or until the bulbs are all gone!).

Please bring gardening gloves, waterproofs in case it rains, and trowel or gardening fork are handy but we will have some spare.

On Wednesday evening David Westgate, chair of the Avon Bat Group, led the friends on a bat watch.

We used bat detectors and tuned into the various frequencies to hear different species of bats around the woodland. We even managed to spot a few as they were hunting for their dinner.

Bats we heard or witnessed included:
Common Pipistrelle
Soprano Pipistrelle
Noctule

Manor Road itself was the most popular route for pipistrelle’s, hunting moths and other insects along the corridor created by the road at the edge of the woods.

Videos of the sounds will be posted separately

There are lots of box-tree moths around at the moment. They will be looking to lay eggs in your box hedges, and the caterpillars can do a lot of damage, so cover them if you can. Covering will be easier than trying to remove or treat for the caterpillars later. The species is not native to the UK.

Pictured is a box-tree moth with open wings. It has white body and wings, with a brown head, brown border on the wings, dark red eyes and long gently curved brown antenna.
