Whilst out on patrol in the rural this morning, PC Robertson and PCSO Nichol stopped off at the Lake District Wildlife Park to speak to a mob of meerkats about their recent antisocial behaviour. They are happy to report the mob were on their best behaviour and took on board the words of advice given.

Due largely to social media, the demand for exotic pets such as meerkats has led to impulse buying of these animals, which are then kept in a domestic setting. Due to the complex needs of meerkats in a domestic setting, keeping such animals in this environment can often lead to breaches in the Animal Welfare Act.

We have supported SEED Madagascar for many years now and it heart warming to hear their progress over the years on Project Ala.

Please read this extract from what our support helps them with:

"The 2026 planting season delivered 18,500 native seedlings across 24 indigenous species, the largest planting effort in the Ala Programme's history, with survival rates exceeding 70% in the first six months. Nursery capacity grew from 12,000 to over 31,000 seedlings, and firebreaks were widened across all five corridors and the perimeter of the S8 protected forest. Camera traps confirmed Endangered collared brown lemurs continue to use the restored corridors, with Thomas' Dwarf Lemurs recorded there for the first time, providing meaningful proof that the restored habitats function as viable lemur habitat and that ecological connectivity is being restored.

Thank you for all your help contributing funds for such an important project. Thanks to your efforts the forest corridors and lemur habitat is expanding day by day."
